🎉 Celebrating the next generation of educators!

Participants in the Teaching Tomorrow internship program recently wrapped up their experience with a special showcase highlighting their learning, growth and commitment to early childhood education.

Created by Cultivate Learning, Teaching Tomorrow is a paid internship program that gives Seattle high school students hands-on experience working with young children while exploring careers in early childhood education.

This year, 16 interns gained classroom experience at partner sites including Hoa Mai Vietnamese Bilingual Preschool, Denise Louie Education Center and Launch. Along the way, they participated in culturally responsive child development coursework, received mentorship from College of Education students, staff and faculty, and earned both high school and college credit while beginning work toward a Child Development Associate credential.

The showcase marked the culmination of months of learning, mentorship and hands-on experience. Three students from this year’s cohort are continuing on to study education, while the rest return to finish high school with new skills, stronger connections and greater confidence for what comes next.

Colleague AI is looking for districts and ESCs/LEAs to participate in a national AI educator training initiative, funded by a National Science Foundation grant. The goal: train at least 4,800 educators nationwide, at no cost to participating school districts, education service centers, regional service centers, LEAs, and county offices of education.

Training is delivered by PhD researchers and experienced educators, in-person, live remote, or self-paced, and covers responsible classroom AI use, administration, ethical implementation, and rollout strategy, plus hands-on tool practice. Districts can run half-day, full-day, or two-day sessions (small districts can co-host with a neighbor to meet minimum attendance); regional or state agencies can host for the districts they serve.

Educators who complete training can work toward the AI Certified Educator credential through the University of Washington, plus monthly webinars and a community of trained peers. If your district, service center, or agency wants in, applications are open now.

Dr. Betina Hsieh, Endowed Professor of Teacher Education and Teacher Learning for Justice, is the lead editor of a newly published book, Teachers in a World in Transition: International Perspectives on Education Reform and Teachers’ Lived Experiences (Routledge). Drawing from studies across 10 countries and 5 continents, this book asks: How have teachers’ experiences and environments evolved alongside educational reform? How have expectations of teachers changed? and What are the consequences of such change?

Each chapter examines how societal and political transitions are transforming teachers’ daily lives and professional identities. By centering teachers’ lived experiences within their national contexts, it reveals striking parallels in global educational transformation despite unique contexts of change. These perspectives, individually and collectively, allow us to understand recent transformations and educational reform efforts, meet teachers impacted by these changes, and see how transitions impact teachers’ experience of the profession internationally.

Combining original empirical research and comparative analysis, this book offers timely insights for researchers and students interested in international and comparative education, foundations of education, teacher education, education policy, and educational leaders.

The Brotherhood Initiative team — Dr. Theresa Ling Yeh (Director of Research & Programs) and Dr. Joe Lott (Rebecca and Jack Benaroya Professor Chair), with Dr. Heena Lakhani, PhD ('20, PhD, adviser: Dr. Philip Bell; Assistant Professor of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences in the College of Education at Florida Gulf Coast University) — recently published an article in the Journal of the Learning Sciences titled “Redesigning learning spaces for men of color: Restructuring relations within a learning ecology.” The paper offers a retrospective analysis of three iterations of a Social Design-Based Experiment (SDBE) focused on refining a learning ecology for undergraduate men of color.

By studying a multi-year, holistic initiative, the authors illustrate how iterative refinements to various activity structures can lead to the design of learning environments that are responsive to the communities that they serve. This research offers a unique contribution to the field of learning sciences by leveraging principles of DBR and SDBE to provide a model for studying the design of complex interventions that connects design elements to the emerging and on-going experiences of its students. It also provides higher education researchers and practitioners a methodology for integrating equity into their work through continuous learning and adaptation.

New research from the UW College of Education explores how the Project ECHO model can help support parents and caregivers of children with disabilities and challenging behavior. 💜

Dr. Katy Bateman, research scientist at the Haring Center for Inclusive Education, and Dr. Katelin Hobson (’23, PhD; adviser: Dr. Ilene Schwartz) have published an article in Beyond Behavior examining the use of Project ECHO to connect parents and caregivers with support, knowledge and resources.

Project ECHO uses a collaborative learning model to bring expertise and community-based knowledge together—helping families navigate challenging behavior while supporting the inclusion and well-being of children with disabilities.

🎉 Congratulations to Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum alumna Sahar Basit (’25, M.Ed.; adviser: Dr. Manka Varghese) on the publication of her research in Working Papers in Educational Linguistics, a student-managed journal at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education.

Sahar’s article, “Decolonizing IB Education: Integrating Multiliteracies and Cultural Responsiveness in Pakistani Classrooms,” offers a practice-oriented framework for integrating multiliteracies and culturally responsive teaching in International Baccalaureate classrooms in Pakistan.

The paper was developed with mentorship from Dr. Lakeya Afolalu, Assistant Professor of Language, Literacy & Culture, who was invited to serve as Sahar’s faculty mentor through the journal’s faculty mentoring program. The program pairs emerging scholars with faculty mentors to strengthen manuscripts for publication.

We’re excited to celebrate Sahar’s scholarship and the mentorship and collaboration that helped bring this work to publication. 📚✨
