Watch for phishing scams for fraudulent job & internship “opportunities.” Over the years, scammers have become more sophisticated in their phishing attempts, promoting job and internship opportunities that appear legitimate and trustworthy.

To avoid falling victim to one of these schemes, review the tips from the resources linked in our bio and remember that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

What to do if you think something is a scam:
- Do online research by looking up the name of the company plus the words "scam," "review," or "complaint."
- Talk to someone you trust and run the offer or opportunity by us in the Career & Internship Center at [email protected] or 206-543-0535
- Don't pay for the promise of a job or bank on a "cleared check" as legitimate employers will never ask you to pay to get a job
- Report the fraudulent position, email [email protected] if found on Handshake and include the original email as an attachment in an email UW-IT at [email protected] if you learned about the role via your UW email.

- How? Send a connection request with a brief message to someone in your field or a professional you admire.

- Attend a career workshop or event.

- Ensure your resume is clear, up-to-date, and ready to share.

If you're looking to land an internship...
- Complete your LinkedIn profile.
- Be sure to fill out your LinkedIn profile with relevant information about your education, skills, and experience.

Before diving into an internship or on-campus job, it can feel like "passion" and motivation are enough to land you that role. But employers often look for more than passion, they’re waiting for you to demonstrate how you've built skills that support that interest.

The good news is that employers value passion when it's paired with skill building, even when those skills come from experiences beyond internships.

Skills and interests grow when you reflect on how you:
- got good at something and learned what motivates you
- worked collaboratively and showed up for a team
- recognized and understood the impact of your work

Think about experiences you've already had and what skills have you've build so far:
- communication
- leadership
- teamwork
- problem-solving
- project management
- literature research

Build your passion and skills by investing in experiences that will strengthen your resume, such as:
- volunteering
- part-time off-campus work
- freelancing
- self-directed projects
- leadership roles in student organizations
- competitions or hackathons
- research
- micro-internships

Finding an on-campus job can be confusing if you're not sure where to look or how to prep applications. Here are five answers to common questions about on-campus jobs:

1. How many on-campus jobs are there?
Over 500 roles were posted on Handshake last year. But on the flip side, over 10,000 students applied for those roles.

2. When are jobs posted?
Hiring happens year-round, but August-September & February-April are peak seasons.

3. Do I have to use Handshake to find a job?
No! There are jobs posted on department websites, promoted on social media, and the UW Work Study site.

4. What if I don’t have enough “experience”?
You likely have lots of transferrable skills! Highlight any volunteer work, retail or service jobs, leadership activities, or relevant class projects.

5. How can I best prepare to apply to a job?
Apply with thought and intention, which means tailoring your resume, writing that "optional" cover letter, selecting specific jobs that fit your interests & needs rather than mass applying, and practice interviewing.

As part of our ongoing social media series highlighting C&IC staff, please say hello to Chris Cummings (He/Him) who has been serving as one of our Peer Coaches this academic year!

Chris is currently in the second year of the Master of Public Health - Community-Oriented Public Health Practice (COPHP) program and is set to graduate in June. He's been living in Seattle for almost nine years and originally grew up in Massachusetts. As a first-generation student, Chris is the only member of his family to pursue higher education, which is deeply important to him as an accomplishment. Additionally, Chris is also a huge lover of animals, pets, and lives with a black cat named Leon!

In his free time, Chris enjoys reading a variety of literature with a particular favorite author of his being JRR Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings series. This Summer he hopes to dive into more reading for his own personal enjoyment as a reward for completing his graduate studies. Chris is also a skilled home cook/baker and enjoys having friends over for shared meals.

As one of the C&IC's Peer Coaches, Chris takes pride in providing a safe and encouraging space for students to receive constructive feedback. The most rewarding part of the job for him is knowing at the end of a session, students are walking away feeling more confident and have received the resources they need to move forward with the next step of their professional development. Chris also finds it deeply enriching to continuously get to know students and discuss their career goals.
