TLU School of Music

TLU School of Music The School of Music endeavors to provide an important arts emphasis to the liberal arts education and to produce qualified musicians and music educators.

The School of Music offers programs leading to a bachelor of music with concentration in either music education, performance, or the bachelor of arts degree in music. Students not majoring in music may earn credit in band, choir, chamber orchestra and applied music for satisfying minimum degree requirements. The TLU School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.

Welcome Prof. Yixuan (Amber) Wang!

Dr. Yixuan (Amber) Wang serves as adjunct faculty in Piano at Texas Lutheran University. She is also an adjunct faculty member and staff pianist at Austin Community College and maintains a private piano studio serving students throughout the Austin area.

Dr. Wang began her piano studies at a young age. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She later received her Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from The University of Texas at Austin, specializing in collaborative piano under the guidance of Dr. Colette Valentine.

An active collaborative pianist, Dr. Wang has performed with participants in the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in 2015 and 2019. In 2019, she served as a pianist at the International Performing Arts Institute in Germany. In 2024, she performed with the University of Texas Wind Ensemble at Carnegie Hall. She previously served as a staff pianist at The Tianjin Juilliard School and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor from 2019 to 2023.

Welcome, Prof. Erik Vincent Anderson!

The TLU School of Music is excited to welcome Prof. Erik Vincent Anderson to the faculty as Instructor of Trombone and Euphonium for the 2026ā€“2027 academic year!

A native of San Antonio, Prof. Anderson holds a Master of Music in Trombone Performance from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and a Bachelor of Music in Trombone Performance from the University of North Texas. While at Indiana University, he performed with the IU University Orchestra, IU Trombone Choir, and Historical Performance Institute.

An accomplished performer and educator, Prof. Anderson has participated in festivals and workshops including the Chautauqua Music School Festival Orchestra, Hot Springs Music Festival Orchestra, and San Francisco Early Music Society Summer Workshop. He was also a finalist in the 2013 International Trombone Association Larry Wiehe Competition.

Prof. Anderson maintains a private teaching studio throughout San Antonio and active performing career. He currently serves as Assistant Principal Trombone of the San Antonio Philharmonic and performs with the Mid-Texas Symphony, Opera San Antonio, San Antonio Brass Band, and Sonido Barroco San Antonio.

We are thrilled to welcome Prof. Anderson to the TLU School of Music and look forward to the artistry and expertise he will bring to our students and ensembles!

Welcome, Prof. Tyler GuzmƔn!

The TLU School of Music is excited to welcome Prof. Tyler GuzmĆ”n to the faculty as Instructor of Clarinet for the 2026ā€“2027 academic year!

A Colorado native and Texan by choice, Prof. GuzmƔn is a clarinetist, educator, and arts advocate based in San Antonio. He brings an active career as both a performer and teacher, with a particular passion for expressive performance and the exploration of both classical and contemporary repertoire.

Prof. GuzmƔn regularly performs with ensembles including the Prickly Pear Clarinet Ensemble, River City Winds, and the Symphony of the Hills in Kerrville. He also serves as Sales & Marketing Manager for Clarinet World, a clarinet specialty shop.

As a dedicated educator, Prof. GuzmƔn maintains a thriving private studio and co-directs the Mini Pears Clarinet Ensemble, a student ensemble focused on developing young musicians through collaboration, performance, and a shared love of the clarinet.

We are thrilled to welcome Prof. GuzmƔn to the TLU School of Music and look forward to the artistry, energy, and expertise he will bring to our students and ensembles!

Welcome, Prof. Roland Sandoval!

The TLU School of Music is thrilled to welcome Prof. Roland Sandoval to the faculty as Instructor of Saxophone, Jazz Band, and Music Education for the 2026ā€“2027 academic year!

Prof. Sandoval began his undergraduate studies in Music Education from Texas Lutheran University and completed his B.M.Ed., from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), along with a masterā€™s degrees in education from Our Lady of the Lake University, and conducting from UTSA.

Prof. Sandoval brings more than two decades of experience as a music educator, conductor, arranger, and band director. His career includes award-winning programs in Kingsville ISD, Hondo ISD, and Northside ISD, where he spent 20 years as Associate and Director of Bands at Sandra Day Oā€™Connor High School. There, he conducted four concert bands, two jazz ensembles, and a jazz combo, while also serving as arranger and drill designer for the schoolā€™s acclaimed 400-member Panther Marching Band.

His higher education experience includes serving as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at UTSA from 2018ā€“2021, where he worked with the SOSA Marching Band, all three university concert bands, and undergraduate instrumental music courses. He has also served on the adjunct music education faculty at Trinity University and as Fine Arts Instrumental Music Coordinator for San Antonio ISD.

We are excited to welcome Prof. Sandoval back to TLU and look forward to the experience, expertise, and passion he will bring to our students and ensembles!

We are happy to welcome a few new faculty this semester! First up we have Ross Cawthon, who will be directing the choirs while Dr. Boyer is on sabbatical. Read more about Professor Cawthon below!

Ross Cawthon is the Visiting Assistant Professor of Choral Activities at Texas Lutheran University. He is completing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Louisiana State University, and holds a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting and a Bachelor of Music Education degree, both from the University of Florida. While in Louisiana, he served as chorusmaster for Opera Louisiane and founded VIVA Choral Ensemble in Baton Rouge, where he serves as Artistic Director. He currently serves as Development and Scholarship Chair for the Southwestern American Choral Directors Association, and is a board member of The Matthew Buth Foundation, a non-profit scholarship organization based in DeLand, Florida.
