We can't believe its already been a month since the Stream Ecology Institute from July 11-17th 2021! We were so fortunate to be one of the few Summer Pre-College Programs to run at Susquehanna during such an uncertain time. The week was packed with learning, sample gathering and processing, fish, invertebrates, and even more fun!

Some more photos from weeks past (7 June – 11 June) both in the field and in the lab! In total, we have six sample sites that we will visit every week on Monday and Tuesday. Highlights so far have been that we encountered some interesting creatures; attempted to see if we found a freshwater sponge; and scrubbed some rocks with toothbrushes!

It’s that time of summer again for the Holt Lab, and we’re all happy to be back! This year we will be focusing on the water quality, plankton, and algae of Faylor Lake, Walker Lake, the streams which flow in to and out of these water bodies. Doing so, we hope to analyze the influence of the dams in these areas.
Sampling started off with a boom in many ways these past few weeks (28 May - 11 June)! Katie lost her glasses in Walker Lake right away due to the floating dock. Then, once Kendra arrived on campus, there was a severe surface bloom on Walker Lake! Thankfully Faylor Lake has been the relieving factor so far, even presenting us with a group of Cabbage White Butterflies!

The team has been very busy these last weeks. The rock baskets from sites 1, 2, 3, and 4 have all been collected and the team plans on retrieving site 5's baskets tomorrow. They also participated in a symposium at Lycoming College two weeks ago and Rachel and Christina presented their research on the head water site, Green Gap Run, at Juniata College last Thursday. The rest of the days are lab days in which the researchers look to finish analyzing their data that will be presented at Bucknell University this October.

The team performed the weekly river and head water analysis procedures and are using Thursday an Friday to analyze their data. During the visit to the headwaters, a perspective student joined the team to get better insight on what the research consists of.
