Big news for area students! Seminole State College’s Talent Search-West program has been awarded a $1.25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to continue providing college preparation and academic support services to middle and high school students.

The program will receive $250,000 annually for five years and serve 500 students in grades 6-12 at seven area schools: Earlsboro, Macomb, Maud, McLoud, Pleasant Grove, Shawnee and Tecumseh.

Talent Search-West helps students stay in school, graduate from high school and prepare for success in postsecondary education.

College starts early for 106 students at North Rock Creek Public Schools.

Nearly 47% of the school’s juniors and seniors are taking SSC courses this fall, the largest group from any single high school at the College. With support from their counselors and a dedicated concurrent classroom, they are earning college credit while staying connected to high school life.

At one time, 35 Oklahoma towns tried to operate their own junior colleges. Seminole was one of them.

These small, locally governed schools shared high school classrooms, provided affordable access to college and competed in the Mistletoe Conference. The league brought students together for basketball, debate, tennis and softball before World War II scattered its teams in 1942.

Seminole State College began demolition of the former S. J. Sarkeys Dormitory on Sept. 2, removing a long-vacant campus building completed more than four decades ago. Built in 1983, the two-story, 44-bed residence hall once housed male and female students. One-time deferred-maintenance funding allowed the College to safely remove the structure after deterioration, mold and other safety concerns made it a liability.

The Academy of Seminole will showcase the work of student filmmakers during a public premiere of the original short film “Stay Awake” on Friday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. in the Jeff Johnston Fine Arts Auditorium at Seminole State College. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

Thinking about adding a second 8-week class this fall?

If you are currently enrolled in 16-week classes and receive federal financial aid, you must enroll in any additional second 8-week classes by 5 p.m. tomorrow, Aug. 31.

These classes do not begin until October, but the enrollment deadline for financial aid purposes is Monday.

Take a look at the available second 8-week classes now and make sure you are enrolled by the deadline.

Seminole State College recently hosted USA Esports National Team Manager Daniel Clerke and Maryville University senior Nick Wiseman for a presentation where Clerke discussed his philosophy of treating esports like other youth sports, using competition to teach discipline, teamwork, personal responsibility and the importance of physical and mental well-being.
