Most banned and challenged books share stories from members of diverse communities. By limiting the types of stories that can be shared, adults and children alike are being told that they don’t belong, and that their lived experience poses a threat. Libraries are places for all people to learn and grow, and the practice of banning books is entirely counterproductive to that purpose. Come and check out books that have been challenged across the US today, and experience these “dangerous” voices and all they have to offer. Featured this month in the main lobby!

Our September display in the Children’s section features a variety of book and movie editions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The birthdays of both Frodo and Bilbo Baggins fall on September 22nd, thus, September is the perfect time to party like a hobbit! In fact, the date itself has been a fan holiday known as Hobbit Day since the 1970s.

Stronger Than You Think by Sherry Hamby, PhD.

"At one point or another, life will break us open. This is when we need resilience most—but as psychologist Dr. Sherry Hamby reveals, many of us are going about it the wrong way. Resilience isn’t something you either have or don’t. Instead, it is a modifiable process—meaning anyone can learn, practice, and benefit from it across every stage of life."

Sherry Hamby has taught at Sewanee since 2008. She is a Distinguished Research Professor of Psychology at the University of the South and Director of the Life Paths Research Center.
