Yesterday was a great day! It started off with a 3:30am drive to the Omaha airport in -16 weather to head down to O’Fallon, IL to join our brothers and sisters in the Southern Illinois District for their convention. The worship service was wonderfully encouraging, uplifting, and fixed our eyes squarely on the cross and empty tomb of Jesus. We even got to sing a tune written by our own Kurt von Kampen! What a joy it is to gather with the saints!

August 28 is set aside among Christians of the western world to remember Augustine of the fourth century AD.

Augustine is highly respected among Christian theologians. A native of North Africa, Augustine's mother Monica was a dedicated Christian while his father Patricius was an unbeliever until just before his death.

Regarded as a brilliant student from his youth, a generous donor enabled Augustine to study at the respected school at Carthage. He became a master of Latin and student of philosophy. He was enthralled with Manichaeism, thinking it superior to Christianity.

Augustine's journey away from Christ and his immoral life as a young man fathering a child outside of marriage deeply troubled his mother Monica who never ceased praying for him.

Augustine was strongly influenced by Christian leader Ambrose of Milan and at age 31 was baptized along with his son becoming a man who knew and lived in the grace of God by forgiveness from Christ. He became a priest and then bishop of Hippo in Algeria. Through his in depth writing on the Scriptures he came to be known as the "Doctor of Grace."

His writings are heralded to this day, especially his Confessions and City of God and would influence the Reformation of the Church in the 1500s. Martin Luther was an Augustinian monk in in younger life who was grateful for Augustine's theology.

Augustine's life and service to God reminds us what God can do in the lives of people today. He transforms lives through Christ and blesses the world through them.
