The Micah Scholars community spent yesterday welcoming our new 1st Year Scholars to campus at Concordia University, Nebraska!

Our 1st Year Scholars started their day with a meet and greet and opening devotional with Professor Rathke at breakfast. They, then, had an all-access tour led by Dr.
John Jurchen of our phenomenal science facilities. This was followed by a presentation on "How to Be A Successful Pre-Health Student" led by Dr. Skelton, along with a Q&A panel from other wonderful science faculty. We ended the evening with fun and fellowship, having a wonderful open house and dinner alongside the Uzziah and Paul Scholars.

🎉 Meet the New Director of the Micah Pre-Health Scholars Program: Cara Rathke! 🎉

We are excited to welcome Cara Rathke as the new Director of the Micah Pre-Health Scholars Program at Concordia University, Nebraska!

Cara is a proud Concordia Nebraska alumna and brings a unique background as a Pathologists’ Assistant, where she was trained to dissect surgical specimens and perform autopsies. Her passion for science, healthcare, and mentoring students makes her a wonderful addition to the Micah Scholars community.

A few fun facts about Cara:

🎶 She played clarinet in the Concordia Symphonic Band and also plays the piano and cello.

❤️ She is married to her high school sweetheart, who is also a Concordia Nebraska graduate.

👧👧👧 She is the proud mom of three daughters—her youngest was born on Christmas morning!

🧶 If she's wearing a sweater or scarf, there's a good chance she knitted it herself.

📚 When she's not knitting, you'll likely find her reading a fantasy novel, listening to rock music or a podcast, or getting a tattoo.

Please join us in giving Cara a warm Micah Scholars welcome! We look forward to the knowledge, enthusiasm, and care she will bring as she invests in the next generation of healthcare professionals.

We can’t believe June is almost over already!

As we look back on this past year, we’re remembering fun moments like our end-of-year Micah Scholars party—complete with paint-by-numbers, games, and lots of laughs. 🎨🎲

We were also so glad to have several of our pre-health faculty join us, including Dr. John Jurchen, Dr. Kristy Jurchen, and Dr. Raegan Skelton!

We’re so thankful for the memories made this year and can’t wait to welcome Micah Scholars back to campus soon! 💙

Some of our Micah Scholars had the sweetest hands-on learning experience recently 🐑💛

We had the opportunity to visit a local hobby farm in Bee, NE, owned by Concordia University, Nebraska alum, Haley Nelson Kindrex, where students spent time with lambs and learned what daily life looks like caring for them. With two of our scholars pursuing Pre-Vet paths- and several others curious to explore- it was such a meaningful experience!

Students learned about:
• The breeding process
• Newborn sheep care 🐑
• What sheep labor looks like (and when assistance is needed)
• General care and management
• Common illnesses and health concerns

It was a fun, informative, and memorable day—full of learning and lots of lamb cuddles!
