Dr. Campany presented collaborative research today at the Botanical Society of America conference in Boise. He presented data on the ecophysiology of plants grown in aquaponics ( Farm) and what that means for food security. Shoutout to a great undergraduate team from our Biology and Environmental Science departments that performed the research.

Ventral view of a gastrulating fruit fly embryo taken on our confocal microscope. Green fluorescence labels all nuclei in the developing embryo. The black and white panel shows visible light. The right panel is an overlay. The curved cephalic furrow that divides the head (toward the top) from the rest of the body is marked with an arrow.

As part of a multi-institutional grant, Dr. Sipe has received funding from the National Science Foundation to establish a neuroscience research program for Shepherd students. Congratulations, Dr. Sipe!

Faculty and students are excited about the role Shepherd will play in neuroscience research that will take place under a $20 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), called the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR).

The grant will provide stipends for students who help conduct research during the academic year and in the summer. It will also give them opportunities to do research at other institutions participating in the grant.

The first image captured by two of our summer research students, Erika Voges and Ronaida Ammari, using our new Leica confocal microscope. This fluorescent image is a single lobe of the fruit fly brain with cell membranes stained red. The large cells in the image are neural stem cells that divide during development to produce the cells of the brain. The smaller cells are the neurons and glia that make up the central nervous system of the fly.
