How many cases have you seen get dismissed or dropped because a victim’s reaction “didn’t add up?”
If we don’t understand how trauma impacts a person, we create false expectations of how a victim “should” behave during or after a sexual assault.
Sexual assault is already one of the most underreported crimes. For survivors who choose to report, a significant percentage of those cases are coded as “unfounded” by the criminal justice system. It’s often because their reaction didn’t match what we expected trauma to look like.
Not understanding trauma is a massive training gap that can derail sexual assault investigations.
