From the classroom to the community! 💜💛

Our DPT students put their knowledge into action during a “Balance Matters” class through the Caddo Council on Aging. They had the opportunity to learn about balance and fall prevention while engaging directly with older adults in our community.

These experiences are an important part of preparing future physical therapists to promote safe mobility, independence, and quality of life across the lifespan.

Congratulations, Dr. McCallister and Dr. Coehoorn! They both prefer to hide from the spotlight, but their research efforts continue to inspire us all and deserve this highlight.

Please help us congratulate two of our faculty researchers from the School of Health Professions on a significant achievement in research funding! Cory Coehoorn, PhD and Erin McCallister, PT, DPT, PhD, received the first three direct research awards from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the history of both LSU Health Shreveport and the LSUHS School of Health Professions and Sciences.

Cory Coehoorn, PhD, Associate Professor and Chair of Rehabilitation Science and Associate Professor of Family Medicine, received a two-year $358,181 R21 award from the CDC for his project, "A Novel Approach to Predict Core Temperature Among Agriculture and Construction Personnel." He also received a two-year $145,150 R03 award for his project, "The Impact of Rapid Heat Stress on Motor Performance and Control in Firefighters."

Erin McCallister, PT, DPT, PhD, Board Certified Specialist in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy and Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy, received a two-year $141,813 R03 award from the CDC for her project, "Role of Dual Task Cognitive-Motor Interference in Firefighter Job Task Performance."
