Join us on Sept. 9 for an engaging presentation, celebrating America's 250th Birthday, by highlighting the story of The First Lady's Enslaved Maid and a Chimney Sweep. MCC Philosophy Instructor Stephen Charnley will recount the daring escape of an enslaved young woman who lived and worked in the President's House in Philadelphia in the late 1700s. Discover how her flight was probably engineered by the chimney sweep who cleaned the Washington's chimneys. Get the "backstairs" story and follow the drama from Mt. Vernon to Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

This event is open to the public and is in the Library on the lower level of the Donald C. Burns Administration/Library Building on MCC's Sidney Campus.

A new face will be at the helm of Montcalm Community College's annual Bramble Ramble 5K Run/Walk this year.

This year's annual fall race will be overseen by MCC Science Operations Manager Ryan Kieffer, who will serve as race director this year. The change comes with Kieffer's recent job title change, which will involve more oversight of outside areas around the Sidney campus, as well.

“I want to carry on the great tradition of Bramble Ramble," he said. "It’s a team effort, we want to bring on employees, students and community members to help out with the event and also participate in it. We’d love to continue to see the expansion of it and add more runners each year.”

This year's race will take place on Saturday, September 19 at 9 a.m. at the Robert E. Marston Pavilion on MCC's Sidney campus. The start and registration location has changed from the Barn Theatre of previous years, which will make very slight alterations to the racecourse.

Tore Skogseth, M.A., is a Student Success Counselor at Montcalm Community College.

Hailing from the foothills of the Norwegian mountains, this thunderous bearded Norwegian left the fjords of Norway for the cornfields of Michigan (following a brief interlude between soybean fields and refineries in Southern Illinois).

He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Family Life Education in 2004 and his Master of Arts in Counseling in 2007, both from Spring Arbor University. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Michigan. While Tore loves meeting with students, he also discovered a love for teaching. He started teaching GNST 100, Success Skills for the 21st Century, in fall 2012 and, as the department chair for the General Studies department, Skogseth has had a big influence on the development of the course.
