UAS Applied Fisheries

UAS Applied Fisheries Welcome to the Fisheries program at the University of Alaska Southeast in Sitka. in Fisheries Technology.

Alaska is currently experiencing a shortage of fisheries technicians and fisheries biologists – a trend predicted to continue for at least the next 10 years. The University of Alaska Southeast, Sitka Campus, has partnered with industry and regulatory agencies to develop programs that can meet this growing need for qualified personnel. Companies within the fisheries industry have donated scholarship money to make internship opportunities, training and work experience a large part of the education process. The resulting programs are the Fisheries Technology Occupational Endorsements, Certificates and the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) Completion of our programs can lead to employment opportunities in a wide range of technical and non-technical jobs. The UAS Fisheries Technology Pathway to Employment Project is 100%
funded through a $2,507,463 U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and
Training Administration Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College
and Career Training Grant. UAS is an AA/EO employer/program and
auxiliary aids & services are available upon request to individuals
with disabilities.

It’s been a shell of a week for Alaska Aquaculture Semester Students🦪: visiting Merrick Shellfish to experience some FlipFarm ASMR, touring the UAS Mariculture facility, dissecting Pacific Oysters, and field tripping to the Southeast Alaska Tribal Ocean Research (SEATOR) lab to learn about shellfish testing.

Big thanks to Evan O’Brien of Merrick Shellfish for showing us his oyster farm and gear, and Shannon Cellan & Matteo Massotti of SEATOR for showing us how they can use a Receptor Binding Assay (RBA) to determine the concentration of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) in a shellfish sample.

We are very excited to announce the arrival of the newest addition to our mariculture program… the UAS Mariculture Facility!

The UAS-Sitka Campus has acquired a floating lab from OceansAlaska in Ketchikan that will give our Applied Fisheries programs the opportunity to grow the early life stages of a variety of mariculture species. This facility has the capacity to cultivate 3,000,000 pacific oyster seed and shellfish and seaweed species.

We are excited to provide unique opportunities for education, industry and research right in front of our campus. This project was made possible by the monumental effort of many people across the UA system and beyond. We can’t wait to share the space with you all!

More fishy fun in Week 2 of the AK Aquaculture Semester!

Students spent their second week of class taking and reading otoliths with NSRRA, calculating fecundities at the Sitka Sound Science Center, collecting kidney and ovarian samples, spawning out at Medvejie Hatchery, and practicing some water sampling techniques in different areas within the Sitka Sound. Not a bad way to spend a sunny week

Mementos from a triumphant kelp harvest 🔱

Last week, the UAS Mariculture Team harvested Three-ribbed Kelp (Cymathaere triplicata) that had been outplanted by last fall’s Alaska Aquaculture Semester, in addition to an over wintered line of Split Kelp (Hedophyllum nigripes). The kelp was brought back to the university and distributed to local gardeners to be used as a soil amendment.

Between visiting an oyster farm, touring two salmon enhancement facilities, pressing seaweed for the UAS herbarium, dissecting oysters, and inoculating microalgae students were BUSY during this 3-day lab intensive. Students came from across the state and country to learn about the current and growing industries of Alaskan Aquaculture. Big thanks to all those who attended in addition to our community partners for giving our students the opportunity to learn from Alaskan industry professionals.
