Wrapping up an incredible year with the Haverlack Civic Scholars End of Year Celebration! 🎉

This year was one for the books — from welcoming new team members John Cosky and Gabrielle Fabery, to presenting the signature Civic Innovation Projects for 2026-27, to gearing up for next semester’s First Year Days of Service event.

A huge thank you to our special guests Dr. Timothy Slekar, Dr. Melissa Swauger and Renee Hazlet for joining us and being part of this celebration.

Here’s to another year of civic engagement, leadership, and making a difference. 🤝💚

ACE Course Spotlight: Civil Engineering Capstone Design II

Students in Dr. Ruby Jazaei’s Civil Engineering Capstone Design II course partnered with the Misty Hollow Art Residency to apply engineering skills to a real-world project.

Through this partnership, students are developing site layouts, preliminary structural designs, and sustainable solar concepts to support future cabin development. This provides practical, feasible solutions that help bring the project closer to implementation.

This collaboration highlights how students can drive meaningful community impact while getting career-ready, hands-on experience.

ACE Course Spotlight: Recreational Therapy Services

Students in Dr. Kaitlyn Mueller’s Recreational Therapy Services class partnered with the Slippery Rock High School to deliver a hands-on, experiential learning initiative grounded in therapeutic recreation.

Through this partnership, students are designing customized assessment tools that capture participant preferences, satisfaction, and opportunities for program improvement.

This course also integrates the TRAILS mentoring model at the Storm Harbor Equestrian Center, where high school students with intellectual disabilities and autism engage in equine-assisted experiences that support growth, reflection, and skill-building.

The partnership strengthens SRU student clinical competency while advancing inclusive, community-driven programming that transforms lived experience into meaningful, evidence-based program development for lasting impact.

ACE Course Spotlight: Media Project Management

Dr. Strahler’s Media Project Management course partnered with 3 community organizations: the Institute for Learning and Retirement, Butler Legacy Wrestling & Fitness, and Growing Together: The Friendship Factory.
Through this collaboration, students are creating a lasting impact for these community organizations. Through student-led media projects, these organizations will have improved long-term outreach, timeless branding, and enhanced audience engagement. Students will also focus on data-driven decision making, which ensures these organizations will have proven tools they can use to communicate and advertise long after the course ends.

Collaboration in action 🤝

The CCE teamed up with the Partners for Campus-Community Engagement to offer a two-day civic learning and community integration workshop. Faculty, staff, and members of the community gathered to learn more about building strong, meaningful community-campus connections that benefit both students and the surrounding community.

From thoughtful dialogue to hands-on design and reflections, this workshop was all about turning ideas into impact.

Thank you to our presenters, Mary Price and Patti Clayton, for your time and insights. Thank you to all attendees for your participation and dedication to the campus and community. 🤲💚

Haverlack Civic Scholar Justin Nowelle has launched a new student organization at SRU as an extension of his work with the Slippery Rock Community Library. The Friends of the Library Club brings together students, faculty, and campus organizations to get involved in community service and engagement projects that make a real impact. Justin is grateful for the opportunity to receive the Haverlack Civic Scholarship and is committed to making the most of it through meaningful service and community impact.

As part of the club’s mission, Justin leads educational sessions on RockServe, helping students understand how to track their involvement and grow their civic scorecard. His work at the library ties directly into his passion for Digital Media Production—from refreshing the library’s website to supporting fundraising efforts for books, services, and future expansion. Since the library relies heavily on community support, the club is stepping up to help.

Last week, the club hosted a no-bake cheesecake fundraiser to support future advocacy efforts and community projects.
