Meet Ishmael Legaspi! 👋

This University of Southern California B.S. HSGI student completed an 8-week summer internship with the Statewide California Earthquake Center - SCEC.

Alongside experienced seismologists and engineers like his advisors Dr. Lucy Jones (Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science and Society) and Dr. Keith Porter (Mortenson Center in Global Engineering & Resilience), Ishmael used GIS and building-inventory data to identify the distribution of buildings in Southern California that are particularly vulnerable to earthquakes.

✨ Internship Highlight

"This internship greatly improved my ability to use ArcGIS Pro. I was able to apply many of the skills I had developed across all of the SSCI classes I’ve taken, and learned even more through working with the complex datasets and analysis demanded by the research."

⏩ Up Next

"I will spend the Fall semester as an intern with the California Geological Survey, where I will develop a post-earthquake model for emergency services that identifies where building damage is most severe and likely after a major earthquake. Longer term, I hope to continue using GIS and spatial analysis in natural-hazard risk reduction, emergency response, and community resilience."

Join USC Spatial Sciences for a talk by Dr. Poornima Prabhakaran on Leveraging Interdigitating Cohorts for Exposomics Research: Perspectives from India.

Trained as a physician at Bangalore Medical College, with an MSc in Epidemiology from LSHTM and a PhD from the University of Bristol, Dr. Prabhakaran studies how environmental pollutants affect the health of children and adults. She's a Lancet Commissioner for Sustainable Healthcare and advises national programs on climate change and air pollution in India, including the National Program for Climate Change and Human Health.
