South Orange–Maplewood’s superintendent says the district is “past the point of easy choices,” warning of an $8.8M deficit in 2027–28 and deeper gaps ahead if state funding and the 2% cap don’t change. At the same board meeting, students, parents, and teachers pushed back on how recent cuts and schedule changes are landing in real classrooms—raising alarms about AP science time, arts access, principal and teacher moves, and basic building maintenance.
