SMCC Foundation This page aims to highlight Southern Maine Community College alumni, community supporters, business partnerships, board members, and foundation events.

Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) opened in 1946 as a day school in Augusta, Maine, under the name of "Maine Vocational Technical Institute" for returning World War II veterans. An increasing enrollment and the rapid growth of various technologies necessitated more comprehensive facilities. During the summer of 1952, the Institute was moved to the site of the former Fort Preble in South Port

land, where it assumed the name of Southern Maine Vocational Institute. It is located close to Portland, the largest city in Maine, on a site overlooking Casco Bay.

🌟Board Member Spotlight: Michael Moore

We are pleased to recognize Michael Moore, a valued member of the SMCC Foundation Board’s Executive Committee and Scholarship Committee.

Michael works in the Public Safety Division at Tyler Technologies, where he develops software solutions that support law enforcement professionals. Beyond his professional work, he volunteers with Preble Street Resource Center, helping to support individuals experiencing homelessness and hunger in Maine.

A resident of South Portland, Michael holds a degree in English and American Literature from Brown University. He brings a thoughtful, user-centered perspective to the Foundation's work and has been instrumental in supporting the implementation of our new scholarship application. Drawing on his background in user experience, Michael has helped ensure the process is intuitive and accessible for students, making it easier for them to connect with life-changing scholarship opportunities. The successful rollout of this software led to a fourfold increase in scholarship applications, and Michael was right there to read and assess hundreds of essays.

We are grateful for Michael's leadership, expertise, and commitment to student success. His service helps strengthen the Foundation's mission and expand opportunities for Southern Maine Community College students.

Thank you, Michael, for all that you do for SMCC and our community!

Maine has made free community college permanent—and that means more opportunity for students across the state.

Beginning with the Class of 2026, eligible Maine students can attend community college tuition-free, continuing a program that has already helped thousands pursue degrees and careers without the burden of tuition.

At SMCC, we see that impact every day.

“Free college made it possible for me to be here at SMCC and gives me a real path forward.” — Yana Montell, SMCC student
