LTU_CoAD Lawrence Technological University College of Architecture and Design (LTU_CoAD), located in Southfield, Michigan offers 13 degrees programs.

The College of Architecture and Design is dedicated to a pedagogy of “theory and practice”, the original motto of Lawrence Technological University. We advocate not one or the other, but both, integrated and coherent. Correspondingly, CoAD offers students insight into grounded design practice, crafted so that our students might enter thoughtfully into current modes of practice and, when appropriate, expand the conversations so that the practices of architecture and design might be more innovative, inclusive, and democratic. We endorse the idea of expanded practice, a “multi-disciplinary” approach to design that includes community-based activities as well as an emphasis upon immersive international experiences. And we promote the notion of advancing practice, design practice and ideas that enable us, as a culture, to make lives better. At the College of Architecture and Design, this idea has reinforced our conviction that technology is a human endeavor and a reflection of people at their best.

A CoAD congratulations goes out to LTU alumnus Matthew Kempa, BSc Industrial Design '25 for winning the prestigious ISFD Pinnacle Award in the Designer-Maker Occasional Tables category.

The International Society of Furniture Designers Pinnacle Awards are an annual award created in April 1995 by the International Society of Furniture Designers (ISFD) to promote design quality and recognize excellence in home furnishings design. They honor furniture, product, textile, and student designers whose original concepts are produced by manufacturers, sold by retailers, and brought into consumer homes.

CoAD congratulations goes out to our students from Advanced Design Studio 1 for their 1st and 2nd place win in the Passenger Experience and Innovations in Airport Terminal Design category of the ACRP - Airport Cooperative Research Program

Sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation and administered by the Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) of the Transportation Research Board (TRB), a program center of the
National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, these awards were presented for design excellence.

1st Place Winner in the 2025-2026 ACRP University Design Competition in the category Passenger Experience and Innovations in Airport Terminal Design ($3,000 cash prize):

DAA talk title: A Series of Questionable Decisions

Drawing from Harold Remlinger’s own experiences through education, professional practice and community engagement, this talk examines the non-linear path of how meaningful learning often comes from choices that, at the time, appear misaligned with conventional expectations toward success.

By examining these moments as critical detours rather than missteps, questionable decisions become positive disruptions that expand one’s disciplinary understanding, refine professional identity, and open pathways that are otherwise undistinguishable. The talk invites participants to embrace curiosity, and imperfect choices that can lead to deeper learning, a stronger sense of purpose and opportunities you never saw coming.

Participants will leave with an understanding to Reframe detours as catalysts, apply "questionable decisions" as a methodology and embrace the value of the unexpected.

In addition to our professional DAA Award, the CoAD DAA Scholarship winner is Reagan Boyle.

This public Lecture and Award Presentation Reception / Exhibit will be held at Lawrence Technological University's College of Architecture and Design Campus. Harold's talk will also be live streamed.
