Earth Overshoot Day is a topic we cover in the Sustainable Upstate certificate program and in the Honors Environmental Stewardship course each spring.
Like a bank account, we are now overdrawing from our Earth balance. Unfortunately, the day continues to come earlier each year.
Our individual actions, activities, behaviors, and choices can make a difference in reversing our current trajectory and improve the balance! As we wrap up don’t forget to take a moment to reflect on our Earth!
Today is Earth Overshoot Day. It means that humanity, from January 1 until July 30th has demanded as much from nature as Earth’s ecosystems can regenerate this year. Humanity is currently using nature 73% faster than ecosystems can regenerate, the equivalent of living off 1.73 Earths.
A variety of factors contribute to , such as cars, power plants and factories emitting more CO₂ than the biosphere can absorb, more freshwater being consumed than is replenished, more trees being harvested than can regrow, and more fish being caught than stocks can replenish. Overuse depletes natural capital and threatens long-term economic security worldwide.
