USC Upstate Library

USC Upstate Library https://linktr.ee/uscupstatelibrary At that time the holdings of the library totaled 9,607. Construction of a new building began in 1976.

The University of South Carolina Upstate Library began in a small room located on the first floor of the Spartanburg General Hospital nursing residence in 1967. Increasing enrollment and lack of physical space, the Library was moved in the Spring of 1968 to the basement of what was formerly the Spartanburg County Health Department. The USC Upstate campus began in the fall of 1969 with one building

– the current Stockwell Administration Building. In addition to housing the Library, the building was designed for classrooms and office space. The project took one year to complete and classes were held in the building for the first time In January 1977. Over the years, the library has been remodeled as services and programs changed to meet the needs of the students. As of the 2014-2015 academic year, the library's volume count is 243,116 with more than 200 databases.

For this Throwback Thursday post we wanted to share a photo of some University of South Carolina Spartanburg ephemera. Fun fact, our campus was not officially called USC Upstate until 2004-2005. Enjoy looking at a campus license plate and a cheer horn from the past.!

Events so nice, we're doing 'em twice (and on the same days)! Drop by the library on September 2 & 3 to visit our new MakerSpace, then get creative while discussing mental health. You could even win a gift card! See you there ☺️

[Image Descriptions: First image text reads: "Library event double feature. September 2 & 3." Second image gives details on two events: MakerSpace Open Houses, 11:00a-3:00p, in Library 261, and Mental Health Painting Workshops, 12:45p-1:45p, at the Library Coffee Shop. Attendees for both events can enter to win gift cards. You can check out the library's new MakerSpace and demo equipment, such as 3d printers and an assortment of crafting machines; and/or discuss mental health while painting the Walt's Waltz mascot (painting materials, drinks, and snacks provided).]

This is not a goose. This is not a gamecock. This is the mascot entertainer known as "The Famous Chicken." The character was created in 1974 and throughout the years has entertained at concerts and sporting events throughout the country. Here is a photo of him making an appearance at one of our campus basketball games from the 1970s.

For this Throwback Thursday post we wanted to share an article and photo from the September 19, 1967 Spartanburg Herald. This article is about our campus opening its doors for the first time in 1967 with 171 students enrolled. The article photo has USC Spartanburg director Dr. Norbert Stirzaker and History Professor John B. Edmunds Jr interacting with some of the very first students. Hard to believe the campus had less than 200 students at some point. Good luck to all our students making it through their first week!

For this Throwback Thursday post, we wanted to share a photo of the Student Government Association (SGA) from 1969. They are assembled in front of the county courthouse. Could they be there for a meeting or for some other training experience?
