The Nisbet Honors Program at Converse University seeks to challenge academically gifted students through an experience that fosters intellectual curiosity, independent research, and deep discussion among a community of motivated peers.

Kudos to our two Nisbet students who completed Honors Directed Independent Studies during the spring semester! Both students also did a public presentation of their work. Victoria Blanton-King presented her study on non-western religious iconography in the 21st century, and Cameran Huyett presented her study on nonprofits and their roles on the global stage. Congratulations, and good work!

This past semester Nisbet Honors Program Students got the opportunity to take Math on The Ballot, an interdisciplinary math/politics honors course. The class was co-taught by last year's Kathryne Amelia Brown Award winner, Dr. Allison Vick, and the Dean of the School of Business and Data Science, Dr. Jessica Sorrells.

The course examined the quantitative and computational aspects of democracy, and students got to learn more about methods of voting, redistricting, data visualization, and game theory. Students also got to participate in fun activities such as trying their hand at gerrymandering and, for the final project, creating their own fake countries (including designing the governments, voting systems, and even country flags).

Congratulations to graduating senior Marie Durflinger, who recently presented her honors thesis in political science, "Who's Your Daddy?: A Study of The Father of Criminology's Effect on The Public Perception of Female Criminals."

An honors-in-field thesis is a year and a half long independent research project that a student completes under the guidance of the professors chosen as part of their advisory committee. Marie's head advisor was Dr. Allison Vick, who also had the honor of teaching this year's Honors Spotlight Course, Math on the Ballot.

If you're interested in giving the paper a read, Mickel Library will soon have a printed and bound copy!

Congratulations to all of our Nisbet students and faculty recognized at the 2026 Academic Awards! In addition to our graduating seniors receiving their certificates, we had many NHP members win various awards as well as be inducted into the Gamma Sigma Society. We couldn't be prouder! 💕
