🏀 Hooptown's next stars are getting their start in Cougar Country! This morning, Director Jerry Crowshoe visited with KREM 2 News, highlighting WSU Native American Health Sciences' inaugural Many Medicines Basketball camp. Over 80 middle and high school students will be at WSU Spokane and Shaw Middle School over the next two days, learning basketball fundamentals, teamwork, and about careers in health care, just in time for Hoopfest weekend.

Celebrating the first graduating class of our Little Birds pathway program! 🎓🩺

Last week, elementary students from Spokane Public Schools gathered on the WSU Spokane campus to celebrate their achievements and completion of the Little Birds program, proudly crossing the stage in their white coats as future health care leaders in the making.

Led through WSU Native American Health Sciences, the Little Birds program introduces elementary students to healthcare careers through hands-on activities, mentorship, and culturally grounded learning experiences, all while helping young students imagine themselves as future health professionals.

What does Indigenous-informed care look like in practice? The Indigenous Healing Perspectives Certificate invites healthcare and community professionals to explore Indigenous perspectives on health, healing, relationships, and care.

Through four online courses, learners gain practical insights to strengthen communication, build trust, and support more respectful and responsive services for Indigenous individuals, families, and communities.

The WSU students come up with games, puzzles, and experiments that reflect their specialty. So, for example, pharmacy students had the Little Birds compounding medications with whipped cream and food coloring, and counting M&Ms and Skittles pills to treat a condition. Nutrition & Exercise Physiology students had the kids doing frog-hop relays to learn about food groups and throwing foam dice to see how many pushups or burpees to do.

Indian Country urgently needs more doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care professionals.

It’s not a new problem, and Washington State University has long offered programs for Native American middle and high school students to open doors to careers in health professions. Now, WSU is taking that message of possibility to younger kids.

Join WSU Native American Health Sciences before Hoopfest weekend for our Many Medicines Basketball Camp on June 24-25. This two-day event, featuring coaches Raymond Fox, Lawrence Hornsby, and Jude Schimmel, is free to middle and high school students.

Drop off will be at 8:30 AM at WSU Spokane and pickup will be at 5:30 PM at Shaw Middle School. Don’t forget to bring your own ball and gym shoes!
