Washington Supreme Court Order on July 2026 Bar Exam and the aftermath.

From the Washington Supreme Court Statement:

"First-time applicants, including all first-applicants eligible to sit for the exam under the APRs, who were unable to take the exam in July 2026 due to the technology failure shall have the option to take a Washington NextGen UBE administered in September 2026 or later, or to instead accept waiver of the bar exam requirement and admission by court order into the Washington State Bar.
They must make the choice to accept the option for waiver of the bar exam and admission by court order by giving notice to the WSBA no later than August 14, 2026, at 12 pm. Those who choose admission by exam waiver and order of the Court may not sit for the September 2026 bar exam; however, should they wish to
sit for a future exam in order to receive a portable NextGen UBE score they may do so later at their own expense."

FYI

Today, Gonzaga University School of Law and Interim Dean Linda D. Jellum formally asked the Washington Supreme Court to grant diploma privilege to applicants whose July 2026 Washington Bar Examination was canceled after unprecedented technological failures.

Our graduates did everything that was asked of them. They completed law school, devoted months to preparing, arranged their lives around the exam, and arrived ready to demonstrate their competence. The failure was not theirs.

When the licensing process fails through no fault of the applicants, fairness requires an equitable remedy. We believe diploma privilege is the fairest available response under these extraordinary circumstances.

We hope to work collaboratively with the Washington Supreme Court and the Washington State Bar Association to identify a fair and equitable solution in light of the impact the bar exam cancellation has had on aspiring lawyers across the state.

We also have asked the Washington Supreme Court to conduct a thorough and transparent review of the events surrounding the July 2026 bar examination, including convening a public hearing.

We are proud of our graduates and stand with them as they seek a fair path to licensure.

It was the first time taking the new Next Gen Bar Exam. Apparently, it was some connectivity issues with the site and the National Conference of Bar Examiners platform. Of the 735 applicants sitting for the exam, approximately 30 who were given ADA accommodations were able to start the exam. The remaining 700 applicants were unable to log on and start the exam.

The Washington State Bar Association canceled the remainder of the July 2026 bar exam after a technology issue prevented most applicants from completing the fir

Today is Day 1 of the Washington State Bar Exam (as well as all other states). Best of luck to those in Yakima taking it.

As is the annual custom, we post the Henry V's Eve of Saint Crispin's Day speech to inspire folks. It is our opinion that the Kenneth Branagh version is the best.
