When disaster struck close to home, Gonzaga alumnus Lt. Col. Dan Wessman ’02, ’11 M.A. found himself serving the community that helped shape him.

As Homeland Response Force Commander for Region 10, Wessman led 250 National Guard soldiers in responding to the Spokane wildfires, including nearly 100 who were housed at Gonzaga in the days following the fires. For Wessman, the experience brought the lessons he learned at Gonzaga into focus, from educating the whole person to living out a commitment to serve and care for others.

His story is one of service, resilience and the power of community during an incredibly difficult time for Spokane.
