Breast Cancer Awareness Month Post

🎀 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This month, we recognize those affected by breast cancer and highlight the importance of education, early detection, and access to care.

Understanding changes in health, knowing your personal risk factors, and talking with a health care professional about appropriate screening can help you take an active role in your health.

At Gonzaga’s School of Health Sciences, we believe that education, compassion, and community are essential to building a healthier future.

Health care is constantly evolving. Staying informed helps us prepare the next generation of health professionals for a bright future.

Through the UW-GU Health Partnership, The Next Generation Lecture Series brings leading voices in health care to campus for free lectures focused on emerging ideas, innovation, and the future of health.
Most recently, we heard from Nathan Sackett, M.D., director of the University of Washington School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Jeffrey Ramirez, director of graduate programs at Gonzaga University's School of Health Sciences, during The Psychedelic Frontier: Exploring the Future of Mental Health.

This week, Gonzaga University’s School of Health Sciences dedicated and celebrated the expanded Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP) learning spaces with members of the Board of Regents, the Board of Trustees, Advisory Councils, elected officials, and partners across the community.

Dean Dr. Julie Wolter, the School’s inaugural dean, shared the impact of training health care workers in cura personalis, or caring for the whole person. Alongside longstanding partnerships with Providence and the University of Washington, Gonzaga’s School of Health Sciences prepares people to take care of each other.

Meet Michelle Percopo, a Gonzaga University graduate whose journey in health care began as a teenager and now reaches across the globe.

After earning her undergraduate degree from the University of Washington, Michelle completed Gonzaga’s hybrid Nurse Practitioner program, which deepened her connection to the Jesuit value of cura personalis, or care for the whole person.

This fall, she will return to Ukraine for a second time, joining fellow providers serving patients in small rural communities and offering trauma-informed care to children and adults living through prolonged war.

Michelle’s work reflects the compassion, clinical expertise, and commitment to service that define Gonzaga nurses. Her return to Ukraine is a powerful reminder that healing begins with listening, caring, and meeting people where they are.

While the University of Washington Huskies and Gonzaga University Bulldogs competed on the pitch on Sunday, both universities are part of the same team in building healthier communities across Eastern Washington.
