The next generation of pharmacists has arrived at Washington State University—and they’re coming from across the country and around the world.

While many students are drawn to WSU because they want to serve their home communities, the growing number of students coming from outside the region reflects the college’s reputation for preparing pharmacists for a changing and increasingly essential health care profession.

A big thank you to Walgreens for making this event possible and providing the White Coats which our newest student pharmacists will wear over the next four years of their education.

We are delighted to announce that Julie Akers has been appointed the 13th dean of Washington State University College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences!

Her tenure as dean begins on September 1. Akers has served the college for over 16 years starting as a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council before becoming faculty in the pharmacotherapy department in 2013. Since joining the college, she has been a staunch advocate for the pharmacy profession by expanding educational opportunities for students and supporting pharmacists to practice at the full scope of their training.

Akers earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Washington State University in 2000 and has been a licensed pharmacist for 26 years. Throughout her career, she has gained significant leadership experience in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors, including serving as director of retail pharmacies for The Everett Clinic, district manager for Bartell Drugs, and a consultant to the pharmaceutical industry.

And, anyone who knows Julie knows she bleeds Crimson through and through. Join us in congratulating Julie with a hearty Go Cougs! in the comments as she takes on this new role!

Go Cougs!

When 17-year-old Sarfaraz Niazi ('71) boarded an airplane for the first time and left Pakistan for Washington State University, he had no idea his journey would help reshape the future of biotechnology.

Today, the internationally recognized pharmaceutical scientist, entrepreneur and author has spent decades advancing biosimilar medicines, influencing regulatory policy around the world and championing affordable treatments for patients.
