Taking learning beyond the classroom.

Students in SPMT 621: Facilities Management got an inside look at Avista Stadium with the Spokane Indians! The class toured the facility with President Chris Duff and learned more about the organization’s operations, facility management and what goes on behind the scenes of a professional sports venue.

This course is a great opportunity for our students to connect classroom concepts with real-world sport management.

Thank you to the Spokane Indians for having us!

Spokane recently hosted five teams for the Inspire Soccer League, a national competitive soccer league for individuals with intellectual and developmental impairment. These teams included Spokane Impact, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, One Knox SC, Winthrop University, and United Genuine FC.

Among the volunteers supporting the event were Dr. Jamie Bartlett, who served as a Match Control Director, and Ellie Lozier, a first-year MASAA student. Their efforts helped ensure a positive and inclusive experience for athletes, coaches, and families throughout an inspiring weekend of competition, community, and connection. 💙💛⚽

Meet Kai, a second-year MASAA student from Taiwan. Before Gonzaga, Kai studied at National Chengchi University in Taiwan and spent a year in Turkey as an exchange student, where he became interested in the behind-the-scenes side of sports.

He is currently an intern with Spokane Velocity FC's Soccer Operations department. On game days, he assists match officials, helps with security and locker room operations, and sets up the scorer's table and walkout materials. On non-game days, he assists with inventory, team gear, nonprofit donations, and other operations projects.

He shared:
“So far, I feel great and excited about what I am assigned to. I have different jobs every day. All of them are necessary in terms of “soccer operations”. My supervisor told me that operations may not be the most interesting job in a sports team. However, it’s the most important job because a team cannot exist without an operations department.”

Today, we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and hold in our hearts all those whose lives were forever changed.

May we honor their memory by choosing compassion over division, extending care to those around us and working toward a world rooted in peace, dignity and hope. We pray for all who continue to carry the weight of this day, and for the courage to stand with one another in times of uncertainty.

May we remember. May we pray. May we care for one another.
