Most architecture firms don’t start the day with a lecture and a multiple-choice test. They start with problems to solve.

That’s how SCC Architectural Technology instructor David Edwards runs his classroom. Class works like a small architecture firm, with students as the architects and engineers tackling real projects. They learn to work through challenges on their own before asking for help. His goal: “teach students how to teach themselves.”

Edwards has spent 20+ years teaching while staying a working architect, with projects that include the Spokane Arena and a U.S. embassy. He keeps spending summers with engineering firms, landscape architects, and contractors so the curriculum matches what the industry actually uses.

Students train in Revit, AutoCAD, and SketchUp and graduate ready for roles as drafters, BIM modelers, and designers. The program also serves as the first two years toward WSU’s bachelor’s in architectural studies, and an industry advisory committee helps keep it aligned with what employers need.

More than 400 people registered for Spokane Community College's Trade Discovery Day last Thursday. Most were high school students exploring 20 technical and trade programs, and they got to tour labs, meet instructors and current students, and try hands-on activities tied to high-demand careers.

Dean of Technical Education Ashley Purdin said the goal is to help every person who walks through the door imagine their future and take the first step toward it. Visitors could also get support with applications, registration, financial aid and disability accommodations on the spot.

Thank you to the SCC instructors, students and staff who made the day happen, and to every family and school that joined us. Our next Trade Discovery Day is in the spring, and prospective students will be able to register for classes onsite.

Students focus better when their basic needs are met. At SFCC, the New to You Boutique makes that real for students at Spokane Colleges: free clothing, shoes, and accessories in a space designed to feel like a store instead of an office.

It's also a natural place to start a conversation. Staff help students get connected to resources for housing, food, health care, child care, and more, through campus and community partners.

Join SCC Outreach at Spokane Community College (SCC) for Trade Program Discovery Day on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Building 6 LAIR.

This free event is a chance to explore 16 technical and trade programs, from cosmetology to aviation maintenance. You can meet instructors and students, try hands-on activities, and learn about applying, registering for classes, and the student support services we offer.
