The mission of the Occupational Therapy Department at Missouri State University is to educate holistic, reflective occupational therapy practitioners who understand the complexity of occupation and value its role in the promotion of health and wellness. Didactic and experiential learning will promote occupation-based practice, ethical leadership, community engagement, cultural humility, scientific inquiry, and life-long learning to develop generalist practitioners who are prepared to meet the needs of persons, groups, and populations across a variety of settings, including those in rural and underserved communities.

Second-year students had some feeding fun yesterday in their Therapeutic Skills lab. They were tasked with ensuring respect and dignity when feeding an adult with a spinal cord injury.

Happy World Occupational Therapy Day!

The theme this year is Participation Matters, which highlights the role of everyday activities, roles and routines in supporting health, wellbeing and quality of life. Occupational therapy advances participation by addressing physical, cognitive, emotional, environmental and social factors that influence engagement in occupations that people want, need, or are expected to do.

✨Fieldwork Friday✨

Last week, Kyndal completed her first level I rotation with AdventHealth Ottawa in Kansas. Her fieldwork educator was Caitlan, who graduated from our MOT program in 2019 and our PP-OTD program earlier this year!

Kyndal enjoyed learning more about manual therapy techniques and how to adapt interventions to each client's needs.

Last week, Drs. Corro and Garrison visited the Missouri State CSD weekly communication group with some adaptive equipment. They gave a review of how we can retrain our brains to be able to do the things we need or want to do.

It was so much fun collaborating with SLP graduate clinicians Ashleigh and Paige!

In the anatomy lab, first-year students are working on building the brachial plexus. By building a physical, color-coded map, students can clearly trace how nerve fibers move from the spinal cord down to the hand.
