This is the last week to see Kate Baird's exhibition at the Pool Art Center Gallery.
On Growth is a prolific group of paintings by Baird.
Kate will be giving an Artist Talk on Wednesday, September 23 at 5:30pm in the gallery.
We also have some bonus art in the first-floor hallway of the Pool Art Center. Some of you may remember DU alum Sergii Bilov who graduated in 2010. Sergii was an international student from Ukraine, a major in Design Arts, and a DU swimmer. After graduating, he returned to Ukraine and got involved in service for his home city of Zaporizhzhia. He has served as the Head of the Dept. of Culture and Tourism and in 2022 brought together a group of Ukrainian artists who created a Wartime Poster series.
Sergii has shared a number of those posters with us, so we are able to display them at the Pool Art Center first floor hallway. Below is the show description. We'll have the work up from now through the end of October.
Courage Has a Voice
Courage Has a Voice presents a selection of works from Wartime Posters, a project launched in May 2022 in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine — a frontline city where culture continues to speak despite the ongoing war.
Conceived and founded by Serhii Bilov, Head of the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Zaporizhzhia City Council at the time (currently Deputy Mayor of Zaporizhzhia), the project began with an idea to transform the city’s public space into an open platform for wartime poster art. Since then, it has grown from its first outdoor exhibition into approximately 40 exhibitions, two book editions, and international presentations, bringing together Ukrainian and international artists who respond to the war through visual art.
The exhibition in the United States marks a new chapter in this story. It is especially meaningful that Courage Has a Voice is presented at the university where Serhii Bilov once studied — bringing a personal history of educational and cultural exchange back to the place where part of that connection began.
Through these posters, contemporary Ukraine shares its experiences, memory, resilience, and values with an American audience. Courage Has a Voice is both an artistic testimony to Ukraine’s resistance and an invitation to dialogue — a meeting of two cultures connected by lasting partnerships and a shared language of freedom.
The exhibition is organized by the Zaporizhzhia City Council, Department of Culture and Tourism of the Zaporizhzhia City Council and, in collaboration with the NGO Contemporary Art Researchers Union, BIRUCHIY Contemporary Art Project, Zaporizhzhia Center for Contemporary Art, as well as participating artists, project partners, and cultural institutions.
