On June 18, 2026, Deborah Anthony, J.D., was admitted to the Bar of the The Supreme Court of the United States. Achieved by only a select group of attorneys each year, admission to the U.S. Supreme Court Bar authorizes members to practice before the nation’s highest court. Anthony, a law professor and Chair of the department of Legal Studies, has been with the University of Illinois Springfield since 2006.
Anthony's admission was recognized during a formal swearing-in ceremony at the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. Before the Court convened, Chief Justice John Roberts spoke privately with the group of admittees. Following the announcement of the Court’s decisions for the day, Anthony was sworn in by Chief Justice Roberts in the presence of the full Court.
Although cameras were not permitted inside the courtroom, the occasion marked an extraordinary milestone in Anthony’s legal career and a memorable experience at one of the nation’s most prestigious institutions.
