As classrooms at SBU prepare to come alive again, we’re looking back at a pretty remarkable classroom experience from June.
Dr. Chris Hill from the St. Bonaventure University Department of Mathematics worked with 12 students in Cathy Haynes’ precalculus class at Allegany-Limestone Central School to take their learning into another dimension. Literally.
Using 7,200 pieces of a construction system called Zometool, the students built a 3-dimensional “shadow” of a 4-dimensional figure called a cantellated hyperdodecahedron. Over the course of a week, they worked during class and study halls to bring the intricate structure to life.
It’s a pretty incredible reminder of what can happen when curiosity, collaboration and a love of learning come together, from one classroom to another.
