The Center for Research on Global Catholicism invites you to a new exhibit on May 1, 2026: "Women Missionaries to Latin America: Microhistories from Chile, Bolivia, and Peru and Their Connection to St. Louis." Drawing on archives of Catholic sisters, including letters, photographs, and community chronicles, this interdisciplinary exhibit situates local St. Louis history within the broader story of global Catholicism. Meet Guillermo Pupo Pernet! Guillermo holds a PhD in Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies, with a concentration in Interdisciplinary Hispanic Studies, from the University of Arkansas. Meet Rebecca Janzen! Rebecca is a professor of Spanish and Comparative Literature at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Her project interrogates the complex relationship between Catholic religious devotion in churches and shrines near mines across the Americas, focusing on religious sites in Cuba, Brazil, Bolivia and Mexico in order to understand the meaning of religious sites located near mines, reflecting on the ways that religious ideas can be used both to justify and to criticize the mining industry’s dangerous working conditions and its environmental destruction
