Associate Professor of Classics Luis Salas will be installed as the inaugural Tragos Associate Professor of Ancient Greek Philosophy on Monday, October 26th. Please come join Professor Salas and the rest of the John and Penelope Biggs Department of Classics to celebrate Professor Salas for this great honor. The installation will take place in the Clark-Fox Forum in Hillman Hall, beginning at 4:30, and it will be followed by a reception.

Last Friday Professor Tom Keeline and MA student Sam McCullough were able have lunch with Dale and Diane Meyer, who generously support the John and Penelope Biggs Department of Classics. Dale is the president emeritus of Concordia Seminary and a former PhD graduate with the Department of Classics. Through the generosity of the Meyers, WashU Classics and Concordia Seminary have been able to reestablish their joint MA program to support students like Sam to study at both institutions.

This last weekend, the John and Penelope Biggs hosted the 2026 meeting of the Illinois Classical Conference. Our own PhD candidate Bayla Kamens and sophomore Isabel Sapp presented their work along with speakers from regional high schools and universities. The conference ended with a trip to Cahokia Mounds.

Dr. Joe MacDonald has been named a 2026 honoree of the St. Louis Business Journal's '40 under 40.' Joe received his PhD in Classics while working in the Office of the Provost. Since March 2024, Joe has served as Deputy Dean of the Olin Business school.

Joe and the other honorees will be recognized on November 5th at FanDuel Sports Network Live in Ballpark Village.

On September 23rd, WashU students, faculty, and staff joined with people from the St. Louis community for a spirited discussion of Christopher Nolan's adaptation of The Odyssey. The discussion took place before a large, engaged audience and began with three short presentations by Kate Wilson of Classics, Rebecca Wanzo of American Culture Studies, and Colin Burnett of Film and Media Studies. The event showcased the breadth of WashU's faculty and how meaningful discussion can arise between three very different disciplines when they meet at the crossroads ancient and modern.

On September 4th, Professor Nicola Aravecchia presented his paper, “Reconfiguring the ‘Great Oasis’: Christian Architecture, Regional Connectivity, and Shifts in the Built Landscape,” at the roundtable “Rethinking Change: Egypt’s Western Desert Oases in Late Antiquity.” The roundtable was organized by the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and held at the Institut national d’histoire de l’art in Paris on September 3rd and 4th.

Thanks to the Penelope Biggs Travel Fund, Art History & Archaeology PhD student Mo Stein spent the summer conducting research in London, Derby, and Stoke-on-Trent, exploring the afterlife of the Classical world in 18th- and 19th-century English art and architecture. From studying Wedgwood ceramics and archival materials to visiting the British Museum and historic country estates, Mo gained valuable insights that will inform an upcoming publication on the intersections of antiquity, art, and politics. We are grateful to the Biggs family for supporting transformative research opportunities like this!
