This summer, MA student Aaron Held traveled to Rome to attend the Advanced Coptic Summer School, supported by the Penelope Biggs Travel Award. Through intensive study with leading scholars and collaboration with fellow graduate students from around the world, Aaron gained valuable skills and connections that will directly support his thesis research on late antique Egyptian monasticism. Congratulations, Aaron!

This summer, Classics & History major Nicole Spangler returned to the Bronze Age archaeological site of Iklaina in Greece, this time as an excavation assistant. Building on her experience as a field school student, Nicole gained hands-on training in excavation management, artifact analysis, and archaeological documentation while helping uncover the history of ancient Pylos. We're thrilled to see our students turning classroom learning into real-world discovery! 🇬🇷🏺

Thanks to support from the Penelope Biggs Travel Award, Art History student Hariett Krajcovic spent the summer exploring museums, study collections, and historic sites across the United Kingdom and Italy. From examining ceramics at the British Museum to studying classical art and architecture in Rome, Florence, and Venice, Hariett gained firsthand research experience that will inform her work as a Greenberg Curatorial Fellow and co-curator of an upcoming exhibition at the Kemper Art Museum.

“This past summer was the most enjoyable, educational, and impactful summer of my life.” Thanks to the Penelope Biggs Travel Award, Caroline Lichty traveled through Italy and participated in an archaeological excavation in Austria, gaining hands-on experience with the ancient world while learning from experts in the field.

Classics PhD student Jake Pawlush recently attended the War in the Ancient World International Conference in Winnipeg, Canada, where he connected with scholars from around the world and explored new perspectives on ancient warfare, history, and literature.

Pawlush presented his research on Ephesos' conflict with a neighboring tyrant in the early Hellenistic period, receiving valuable feedback from fellow researchers working on related topics. He also attended panels on subjects ranging from the Greco-Persian Wars to ancient military memory and historiography. Reflecting on the experience, Pawlush praised the conference's international scope, engaging discussions, and innovative hybrid format linking participants in Winnipeg and Madrid, Spain.

Thanks to support from the Penelope Biggs Travel Award, Michael Davis spent part of his summer conducting research in Italy with WashU faculty. From photographing and scanning Roman wall paintings in Pompeii to exploring Etruscan tombs in Cerveteri and Tarquinia, Michael gained invaluable hands-on experience studying the art, architecture, and cultures of the ancient Mediterranean. We're delighted to share a few highlights from his journey.

From Cologne to Trier, Classics graduate student Owen Embree spent the summer building his German skills, exploring Roman sites, and connecting with fellow Classicists from around the globe through the German for Students of Classical Studies program. Supported by the Penelope Biggs Travel Award, the experience combined language learning, scholarship, and unforgettable adventures in Germany. ✨

From the classroom to the field. 🇬🇷⛏️

Thanks to support from the Kevin Herbert Memorial Fund, Classics student Chris Serrao spent part of his summer in Greece participating in archaeological excavations at the ancient site of Falasarna in Crete. Working alongside researchers at the Temple of Demeter, Chris helped uncover artifacts ranging from figurines and lamps to Neolithic stone axe heads, gaining firsthand experience with the material history he studies in the classroom.

Reflecting on his experience, Chris shared that studying Ancient Greek at WashU helped prepare him for this opportunity, but seeing the ancient world come to life through excavation was truly transformative. Beyond the dig, he embraced the rhythms of Greek life, from visits to the Acropolis to evenings by the Mediterranean.

We are grateful to the Herbert family for making opportunities like this possible and proud to see our students exploring the ancient world firsthand.
