🗣️ Sociology Speaks! 2025 — Our Event of the Year!

The UMSL Sociology Department is proud to host Sociology Speaks!, featuring nationally recognized demographer and scholar Dr. J.S. Onésimo "Ness" Sándoval from Saint Louis University.

Dr. Sándoval will share groundbreaking research on "demographic winter" , exploring the major changes happening in St. Louis and across the region, including declining birth rates, out-migration, and what these shifts mean for our future economy and communities.

Let's talk about our city and how we can shape the future together.

Save the date!📅 UMSL Sociology is hosting a casual end-of-semester reception on May 9th from 5-7pm at The Boathouse at Forest Park on the outdoor patio. We will have a brief program at 5:30pm to recognize the department's award winners, and food and drinks will be available for purchase from The Boathouse.

Students are welcome to bring loved ones and come and go as they please. We look forward to honoring our graduates and celebrating the successes of our students at this celebratory gathering! 🥳🎉

We are excited to share that there's still space in Dr. Johns-Wolfe's summer class on gentrification and residential segregation!

This seminar-style course will meet once weekly on Tuesdays from 4-6:30pm to discuss social science theory and research on urban inequality and change. The course will be hybrid, meaning that students can join either in person or via Zoom. Topics include housing, residential segregation, racial capitalism, urban policy, and neighborhood change. We will read books like: Capital City, Race for Profit, A Detroit Story, and Urban Specters.

We had an incredible turnout for our Spring 2024 colloquium events on Thursday!

Dr. Claire Herbert from University of Oregon joined us to share her research on vacancy & the unhoused in Detroit, which fostered engaging discussions with students and community members in STL.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the events on Thursday and to all who helped make this day happen. It was a great success!

It's finally here! Today is our long-awaited Spring colloquium on understanding and tackling vacancy featuring University of Oregon Sociologist, Dr. Claire Herbert.

Students, there will be an engaging chat/Q&A with Dr. Herbert on campus (302 Lucas Hall) today from 12-1pm. Snacks provided!

Later, at 3:30 this afternoon, Dr. Claire Herbert will be giving a public talk at Delmar Divine in the Community Room. Reception to follow. Bring your thoughts!
