Coming up soon: The 2026 Freedman Fall Address. This year's lecture will be Thursday, September 3, 2026, featuring Peter Kastor, Samuel K. Eddy Professor of History at Washington University in St. Louis, presenting “The Long, Strange Trip to Trump: The Presidencies of Your Lifetime and the Road Ahead.” The event will be held in person at WashU’s West Campus in Clayton, with a Zoom option available.

Congratulations to Kim Lacey, who has been awarded a 2026 Research Grant from the American Historical Association:
The Bernadotte Schmitt Grant!

Kim Lacey, who recently defended her dissertation in the History PhD Program, will be using the grant to further her research and to strengthen the early chapters of her book manuscript.

Ben Wexler, graduate student in History, recently published a paper in the journal Naharaim, published by Franz Rosenzweig Minerva Research Center, HUJI.

In this piece, he offers a compelling look at Charlotte Salomon’s "Leben? oder Theatre?", exploring themes of mimetic violence and sacred performance in her semi-autobiographical masterpiece.

Lee Morrison, graduate student in History at WashU, received the Andy Kelly Prize for Best Article:
𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 - “The Women of the Gate: Ecclesiastical Neighborhood Development in Late Medieval Genoa” (Viator 54, no. 2.)
"Through meticulous research and data analysis, Morrison develops a compelling microhistory of a community of Genoese nuns that has broad implications for the history of women’s communities."

"Ben Greenho: From Linguistics to U.S. Foreign Relations"

Ben Greenho, now a Senior Policy Analyst in Immigration policy at Center for American Progress, initially began his education with the intention to major in linguistics or Spanish. However, after taking a class on the history of U.S. foreign relations in the second semester of his freshman year, he developed an interest in studying history on a deeper, academic level.

His advice for current students: "Stay open to opportunities... and be willing to take them when they arise. The critical thinking and communication skills you gained by studying history will help you adapt to these unexpected opportunities, and that adaptability will make you stand out to employers and colleagues alike."
