The Saint Louis University Department of Health Management and Policy has launched ‘The Discernment Lab: The Saint Louis University Master of Health Administration Case Series,’ designed to provide a series of educational frameworks to help instruct future generations of healthcare professionals.

“In a rapidly changing healthcare environment, emerging challenges require us to adapt quickly and prepare our students to lead through uncertainty,” said Kimberly Enard, Ph.D., interim dean of the Saint Louis University College for Public Health and Social Justice (CPHSJ). “This on-demand case series gives us an opportunity to examine real-world issues as they unfold today, connect those experiences to the classroom, and equip our students with the critical thinking and adaptability they will need to shape the future of healthcare.”

Travis Loux coauthored a publication with Kenton Johnson at WashU Medicine that examined whether Medicare accurately predicts healthcare costs for people with depression and anxiety. Researchers analyzed data from more than 22 million Medicare beneficiaries and found that people with these mental health conditions had much higher healthcare costs than those without.

Individuals with depression, anxiety, or both conditions required more medical care and generated significantly greater healthcare spending, according to the research. Research found that on average, the system underestimated annual spending by about $1,600 for people with depression, $1,200 for those with anxiety, and more than $3,500 for people with both conditions.

As a result, healthcare providers and health plans may receive less reimbursement than is needed to care for these patients. The findings suggest that more accurate funding could help ensure that beneficiaries with mental health conditions have continued access to high-quality care.
