EMS clinicians meet people in some of their most difficult moments. The demands of that work can follow them beyond the end of a shift, affecting their health, relationships, and lives outside the ambulance. They deserve a profession that takes their mental health seriously and makes meaningful support a priority.

As EMS physicians, that responsibility is part of caring for our teams and agencies.

We're proud to share Dr. Bridgette Svancarek, Division Chief for EMS at WashU School of Medicine, helped coauthor “Supporting Mental Health in EMS Clinicians: A NAEMSP Position Statement and Resource Document,” published in Prehospital Emergency Care.

NAEMSP position statements help set national standards for EMS practice and policy. Contributing to this work means helping shape how our profession cares for its own, and a proud moment for our division.

National Preparedness Month – Week 3 🎒

Are you prepared if you need to stay home or leave quickly during an emergency?

An emergency kit can help make sure you and your family have the essentials you need when the unexpected happens.

Consider including:

Water and nonperishable food
Flashlights and extra batteries
First-aid supplies
Necessary medications
Phone chargers or portable power banks
Copies of important documents
Personal hygiene items
Supplies for children, older adults or pets in your household

Keep your supplies together in an easy-to-access location and check your kit periodically to replace expired items.

You don't have to build your emergency kit all at once. Start with the basics and add to it over time.

Be prepared today for what tomorrow may bring.

Our deepest condolences to the friends, family, and co-workers of Karen. For many years, she was one of our toughest yet fairest preceptors who helped get our students truly ready to serve one the streets of St. Louis. Her influence will be sorely missed.

Some television characters entertain us. A few change lives.

For countless EMS professionals, Randy Mantooth's portrayal of John Gage on Emergency! did exactly that. The show inspired untold numbers of people to pursue careers in emergency medical services at a time when modern EMS was still finding its footing.

But Randy Mantooth's impact did not end when the cameras stopped rolling. Throughout the rest of his life, he remained a tireless advocate for EMS, supporting the profession, celebrating EMS Clinicians, and helping elevate emergency medical services into the respected and honorable career it is today.

This week, we lost Randy Mantooth. But his legacy lives on in every ambulance that answers a call, every EMS Educator who trains the next generation, and every EMS Clinician who chose this profession because of a television show that showed the world what service, courage, and compassion look like.

Thank you, Randy. Your watch may be over, but your influence will continue for generations.

Rest in peace.
