Desperate for some good art fun this Halloween? SLICE is your one-stop shop! 🎃

SLICE is a nonprofit arts organization that provides free art programming in St. Louis. It is also the premier comics/ illustration/ small press expo in the city. It features over 120 vendors, panels with artists, writers and publishers, workshops, book signings and more. 👻

HEY! 👋

Are you looking for something to do this Friday evening and want to support the local arts? Well, look no further! This Friday night our very own Lindsay Pichaske is opening up her solo exhibition at the Duane Reed Gallery. Lindsay teaches ceramics here in DADAH and she truly is one of a kind. 🦋

Here is a segment of her artists statement:

“My work is inspired by the raw commonalities of animal and human life, considered through an imaginative, otherworldly lens. The process of making is central to its meaning. My practice is an empathetic gesture; the desire to create a believable sense of life pulls me forward as a maker.”

We wanted to give a huge congratulations to one of our adjuct professors, Sam Tulin, for her solo exhibition “Itsy Bitsty Spider”!! 🕷️ ✨🎉

“My work ultimately asks how one learns to
make a home within oneself. Hope
is not an escape from inherited histories but the labor of creating new realities; an act of building different futures from the fragments of the past.”

Sam teaches sculpture and fiber arts here at Webster as well as teaching at UMSL.

“Itsy Bitsy Spider” is still up for view until October 16. Head to the UMSL Fine Arts building if you haven’t checked it out, you don’t want to miss it! ✨

Students in Lindsay Pichaske’s Professional Practice for Artists class got a special tour of the CAM Great Rivers Biennial, led by Michelle Dezember. Michelle gave them behind the scenes insight into all things Great Rivers Biennial, and they got to see the work of Webster alum Vaughn Davis Jr.

We wanted to give a huge CONGRATULATIONS to DADAH alumn, Dante Douglas, for winning Best of Show in Soulard Art Gallery’s “Art of Darkness” exhibit! 🎉 His painting ‘Canis’ is the final artwork in a longer piece of the same title.

We want to welcome you all the the VAScape! 🌷

VAScape is a student-faculty collaborative project that takes a neglected, weedy, exterior plot of land on the south side of Webster University’s Visual Arts Studios, and transforms it into it into a curated, living ecosystem. 🐝 The location of this installation parallels a daily walkway for students and faculty, presenting an improved first impression that reflects the creativity and intentionality cultivated within out studio walls.

This garden space is designed with year-round visual interest, beginning with the installation of predominately native perennials that supports pollinators and seasonal blooms. By showcasing species that thrive in our local St. Louis environment, we aim to inspire the campus community to pause and become curious about local ecology.

This project perceives natural spaces as an artistic medium; exposing the overlap between ecological, aesthetic, and pedagogical approaches to artmaking. In addition to serving local wildlife, the plants double as art-making materials, such as cyanotype, lumen prints, natural dyes, and subject matter for photography, drawing, and painting. 🍁

By addressing environmental consciousness, we shift education toward an active, experiential, and collaborative format that emphasizes sustainability and place-based learning. Ongoing tending of the garden will be documented through photography, video, and performance, creating a record of the project’s evolution over time.

Ultimately, VAScape serves as a metaphor for the self-evolution of the artist, growth of the department, and for the patient, iterative nature of all creative work. To nurture a landscape is to practice the same sustained attention that art demands.

Thank you to student Annalisa Kercher and professor Natalie Baldeón for making this vision come to life! They recieved the student/faculty grant to install this! ✨🌻
