Thursday, October 15, is the annual Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill! 🌎

The St. Louis region sits near the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which produced a series of powerful earthquakes in 1811 and 1812. A future earthquake could affect our area.

We can’t predict when an earthquake will happen, but we can prepare. Take a few minutes this week to practice Drop, Cover, and Hold On. See the graphic below for how.

Practicing now helps you react quickly and safely when it counts. Learn more at shakeout.org.

Many of the devices we use every day, like phones, laptops, e-bikes, and scooters, run on lithium-ion batteries. When they're damaged, overheated, or charged the wrong way, they can start a serious fire.

This Fire Prevention Week, charge smart:

-Use only the charger made for your device
-Charge on a hard surface, not your bed or couch
-Keep charging devices away from anything that can burn
-Don't leave batteries charging unattended, unplug once your device is fully charged
-Stop using any battery that's swollen, leaking, damaged, or unusually hot
-Recycle batteries, never toss them in the trash

It's Fire Prevention Week, October 4–10! 🔥 Small habits keep our campus safe: never leave food unattended while cooking, practice good housekeeping by keeping fire exits clear, don't overload electrical outlets, and report damaged wiring immediately.

As always, know your escape routes, and call DPS at 314-977-3000 for any emergency

This week in honor of National Preparedness Month, we are encouraging everyone to build a go bag and an emergency kit!

Go Bags vs. Kits
What's the difference? A Go Bag is grab-and-go essentials for when you need to leave fast. A Kit is your Go Bag plus more: since it stays home, you can add bulkier items.

For your emergency kit you can add comfort items since space isn't an issue: books, puzzles, cards, favorite snacks. Update your kit twice a year to keep everything fresh. Also, don't forget about your pets! They should be included in your planning as well.

Do you know the difference between a Tornado Watch and Tornado Warning?

A TORNADO WATCH mean be prepared. A Tornado Watch is issued when a tornado is possible. Know your safe place, such as a basement, or interior hall away from windows on the lowest level of a sturdy building and be prepared to act if a Warning is issued.

A TORNADO WARNING means take action! A Tornado Warning is issued when a tornado is happening or about to happen. Immediately seek shelter in your safe place!

SLU's Emergency Alert system is directly linked to the National Weather Service, and a Tornado warning will automatically go out if we are in the impacted area.
