Older Participants Are Needed for a Weight Loss Research Study at WashU Medicine!

The purpose of study is to assess how muscle and body fat changes after weight loss in participants 50 to 75 years old.

You might qualify for this study if you:

• Are 50 to 75 years of age
• Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 30
• Exercise less than 2.5 hours per week
• Live in the St. Louis area

Participation includes medical screening, body scans and a GLP-1 weight loss medication. Some participants may receive exercise training. Compensation for time and effort is provided (up to $3,425).

Janis Stoll, MD and Samuel Klein, MD are conducting a study to determine whether a ketone ester drink helps improve liver health.

You may qualify for the study if you are:

• 18 to 40 years old
• Have a body mass index (BMI) of 25 to 49.9 kg/m2
Participation includes:
• Screening visits including medical screening, blood tests, and MRI imaging
• Body composition analysis to assess total body and liver fat
• Metabolic studies to assess sugar and fat metabolism
• 2 overnight visits
• 6-week intervention period where participants will either receive the ketone ester or placebo supplement

The study lasts 3-4 months and up to $1,200 is provided for time and effort in the study.

WashU Medicine Researchers from The Division of Nutritional Science Release New Insights on Low-carb Diets

Washington University in St. Louis’ Department of Medicine recently shared an article highlighting a clinical trial involving three popular diets: Keto, Mediterranean, and Plant-forward; and, though all have health benefits, a low-carb ketogenic diet was found to have significantly greater results for improved blood sugar control and liver health.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded Joel David Schilling and Brian N. Finck of Washington University in St. Louis a grant totaling $2,968,917 for a new project dedicated to reducing hepatocyte damage and liver fibrosis by modulating mitochondrial metabolism in liver immune cells.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is very common in people with obesity and is a serious public health problem. Research supported by this grant will help gain a better understanding of metabolism in liver macrophages, a cell type that plays an important role in the development and progression of MASLD. Experiments will be carried out to determine if the inhibition of mitochondrial pyruvate metabolism in macrophages might be a new approach to treat MASLD.

These studies will significantly advance our understanding of how mitochondrial metabolism influences the function of resident and recruited hepatic macrophages in metabolic dysfunction associated steatohepatitis (MASH), address important knowledge gaps about macrophage metabolism and function in MASH, and be a vital step towards harnessing the therapeutic potential of modulating macrophage metabolism.
