Dean F. Kappel (GRAD SW ’75) revolutionized organ procurement in his role as president and chief executive officer of Mid-America Transplant. In 2001, he spearheaded the creation of the country's first stand-alone organ recovery facility, increasing its organ transplants by 153% and the number of tissue donors by 340%.

Happy National Dog Day! They say the Billiken is good luck, and this may just be your day. We're giving away two SLU-branded dog toys and bandanas to celebrate.

About the Giveaway:
Only one entry per person is permitted. Two winners will be selected at random to receive a SLU-branded dog toy and bandana (Approximate retail value: $5).

The giveaway begins at noon (CST) on Aug. 26, 2026, and ends at noon (CST) on Aug. 28, 2026. Entries received before or after this period will not be eligible. The giveaway is open to legal residents of the United States, age 18 or older, who are alumni of Saint Louis University. Void where prohibited. Individuals subject to NCAA restrictions are not eligible.

The winner will be notified by direct message on Aug. 31, 2026. Items will be forfeited if not claimed by 6 p.m. Sept. 3, 2026. No substitutions will be allowed. If the initial winner does not reply in time, an alternate winner will be chosen at random. This is a first-come, first-served promotion. Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received during the entry period and the speed at which entries are submitted. No purchase necessary.

Prizes are non-transferable and may not be substituted.
Saint Louis University reserves the right to cancel, suspend, or modify the promotion if fraud, technical failure, or other factors compromise the integrity of the giveaway.

Winners are responsible for any applicable federal, state, or local taxes.

Eric Wilson (CSB '09, GRAD ED '15) found a familiar face on his recent trip to Osaka, Japan. While SLU is the only university to claim the Billiken as its mascot, he's considered a good luck charm in other parts of the world. In Osaka, visitors rub the Billiken's feet for good luck.
