September is National Preparedness Month—a time to take small steps that can make a big difference when an emergency happens.

This year's national theme, “Americans Stand Ready,” reminds us that preparedness is everyone's responsibility.

At WashU, we're making it personal:

This morning was a great example of campus community partners coming together to learn, collaborate and strengthen the processes that help keep our students, staff, faculty, vendors and visitors safe while on site.

The WashU Emergency Management team facilitated a Crisis Management Team (CMT) Orientation, bringing partners together to better understand their roles and responsibilities during a major emergency.

The CMT is the university’s lead coordinating body during major emergencies. Working primarily from the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), the team provides operational control and management of an incident while coordinating response operations across the university.

The CMT includes the CMT Core Team, Emergency Support Function (ESF) staff and the Incident Management Team, bringing together expertise from across the university to support a coordinated response.

Preparedness is not just about plans and procedures. It is about people knowing their roles, building relationships before an incident occurs and practicing how we will work together when it matters most.

As our Bears make their way back to campus, preparedness comes back with them.

As students return and staff wrap up summer vacations, our WashU Emergency Management team is already focused on what matters most: keeping our campus community safe, prepared and connected.

Recently, our team facilitated a Facilities Emergency Response Group (FERG) meeting, bringing campus partners together to work through a previous emergency scenario. These conversations provide an opportunity to reflect, test our coordination and reinforce something we know is critical during an emergency: we are stronger when we work together.

Preparedness isn't just about having a plan. It's about knowing our partners, understanding our roles and building the relationships that allow us to respond effectively when our community needs us most.

As you unpack and prepare for the semester:

🎒 Build a Campus-Ready Kit
🔋 Keep a phone charger and backup battery nearby
💧 Include water and non-perishable snacks
💊 Pack essential medications and basic first aid supplies
👟 Keep comfortable shoes available
🤝 Encourage your roommates and friends to prepare, too

You can also participate in fire drills, safety training, hands-only CPR and Stop the Bleed programs throughout the year.
