The WashU Emergency Management Department exists to provide a comprehensive and sustainable framework fostering a disaster resilient campus that allows our faculty, staff, and students to learn, perform research and deliver patient care. We will do this through an integrated, all-hazards approach encompassing mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. Success will be rooted in strong collaboration with all of our School departments, our campus partners, affiliated hospitals, the university as a whole and a wide range of government and community organizations.

🚨 When the fire alarm sounds, do you know what to do?

During a fire emergency, knowing how to respond can help protect you and those around you.

Remember these four important steps:

🔴 ACTIVATE: If you discover a fire, activate the nearest fire alarm and alert others as you safely exit.

🟢 EVACUATE: Leave the building using the nearest safe exit. Never use elevators during a fire evacuation.

🔴 ASSEMBLE: Move to your designated Emergency Assembly Point (EAP), away from the building and emergency response operations.

🟢 STAY INFORMED: Follow instructions from emergency personnel and monitor official WashU communications.

Take a moment this week to locate the evacuation maps and EAP signs in the buildings you visit regularly.

We were excited to welcome our friends from the Saint Louis Zoo to the WashU Emergency Management Emergency Operations Center!

Over the past few years, our partnership has continued to grow and so have the opportunities to learn from one another.

From sharing experiences and emergency management practices to building stronger relationships, these conversations help us better prepare for emergencies and serve the communities that depend on us.

Preparedness doesn’t stop at campus boundaries or organizational lines. It takes all of us working together!

DROP. COVER. HOLD ON.
🔹 DROP to your hands and knees, if able.
🔹 COVER your head and neck. Get beneath a sturdy desk or table if one is nearby.
🔹 HOLD ON to your shelter and be prepared to move with it.

Adapt the actions to your mobility needs so everyone can participate.

📸 Practice first. Photos second! After your drill, take a team photo or safely recreate your protective position. Share your photo in the comments or send it to WashU Emergency Management through a direct message. Posting on your own account? Today, in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Day, the WashU Emergency Management team is wearing pink to show our support for everyone whose life has been touched by breast cancer.

For members of our team, this cause is personal. We have family members, friends, and loved ones who have faced breast cancer, reminding us that behind every diagnosis is a person, a family, and a community of support.

Today, we stand together to:

🎀 Honor survivors and those we have lost.

💕 Support those currently facing a diagnosis or undergoing treatment.

🎀 Encourage awareness, education, and early detection.

💕 Recognize the families, caregivers, and friends who walk alongside their loved ones.

In emergency management, we often talk about the importance of preparedness, resilience, and supporting one another. Those same values extend beyond emergencies and into the everyday challenges faced by members of our community.

Fire safety starts with awareness, preparation, and knowing what to do before an emergency happens.

Whether you're in a classroom, laboratory, residence hall, or office, taking a few minutes to familiarize yourself with your surroundings can make a difference.

✅ Know at least two ways out of your building.

✅ Locate your Emergency Assembly Point (EAP).

✅ Review evacuation maps in the buildings you frequent.

✅ Know how to recognize and respond to a fire alarm.

Building Strong Partnerships for a Safer Campus!

Today, the Cintas team rolled out the red carpet for WashU Emergency Management!

Strong emergency preparedness programs are built on relationships, collaboration, and a shared commitment to safety.

Our Senior Program Manager, Ky Kee, has worked closely with the Cintas team to build and strengthen a partnership that continues to support the growth and success of WashU’s Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Program.

Today’s visit provided an opportunity to connect with our partners, learn more about their operations, and discuss how we can continue working together to support the safety and preparedness of the WashU community.

A special thank you to the Cintas team for the warm welcome, hospitality, informative tour, and continued partnership.

🌦️ Weather Ready, Together

Being weather ready takes more than watching the forecast. It takes strong partnerships, trusted information, and coordinated communication across our communities.

WashU Emergency Management recently participated in the Ozarks Region Integrated Warning Team meeting, led by the National Weather Service. The meeting brought together partners from the NWS, Missouri SEMA, media, transportation, State Parks, county emergency management, Fire/EMS, and other organizations to discuss how weather conditions are forecast, communicated, and translated into actions that help keep communities safe.

We are also proud to share that Washington University has renewed its StormReady recognition through the National Weather Service. 🌩️

StormReady recognition reflects the systems, planning, communications, and preparedness efforts we have in place to monitor hazardous weather, receive and disseminate warnings, and help our campus community take action when severe weather threatens.

Both efforts reinforce an important part of emergency management: preparedness starts long before the storm. Building relationships, strengthening warning systems, and communicating trusted information help create a more prepared and resilient WashU community.

WashU Emergency Management enjoyed connecting with our campus community, talking about preparedness and learning more about the resources our campus partners provide to support the Eight Ways to Wellness.

Preparedness and well-being have something important in common: both are stronger when we are informed, connected and looking out for one another.
