After 12 years of leadership, Aaron F. Bobick will conclude his tenure as dean of the McKelvey School of Engineering on June 30, 2027.

Since joining WashU in 2015, Bobick has guided McKelvey through tremendous growth, from expanding the faculty and research enterprise to launching new research centers, interdisciplinary programs and state-of-the-art facilities.

During his tenure, annual research expenditures more than doubled and the number of PhD students grew by 80%. He also helped strengthen McKelvey’s connections across WashU and the St. Louis innovation community.

We are deeply grateful to Dean Bobick for his leadership and service to McKelvey Engineering.

They designed it. They built it. Then they took it into competition.

WashU Ursaworks Robotics finished among the top eight university teams at the 2026 ARC Championship, competing against more than 20 domestic and international teams.

At ARC, teams program autonomous robots to battle head-to-head, while also competing in 3v3 matches that combine tactical combat and objective control. Behind every match are months of mechanical design, programming, testing and refinement.

From mechanical design and embedded systems to computer vision and strategy, students gain hands-on engineering experience while tackling one of the world's most challenging collegiate robotics competitions.

This summer, 10 McKelvey Engineering students traveled to the University of Warwick in England for the EECE International Experience program. From exploring research labs and touring innovative companies to experiencing British culture and connecting with WashU alumni, every day offered a new perspective on what engineering can accomplish.

Student Victoria Lisson said the experience showed her that engineering is "much bigger than solving technical problems. It's about working across disciplines, learning from different perspectives and creating solutions that improve people's lives."

AI is transforming the world around us and the demand for engineers who can build, optimize and improve AI systems is exploding.

WashU McKelvey School of Engineering has launched a new Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence Engineering, equipping students to shape the developing field.

The program is designed for students with a strong computing background and will emphasize building AI solutions that are efficient, reliable and tailored to real-world challenges. Classes will start in fall 2027.

When Mindy Borovsky arrived at WashU, she knew she wanted to study computer science and continue playing the sport she loved. Along the way, she discovered mentors, leadership opportunities and experiences that helped launch her career.

Now leading software project management for iOS and macOS at Apple, Borovsky says the time management, teamwork and curiosity she developed as a WashU student-athlete continue to shape her career today.

As a middle school student, Lucy Cheadle Levin read a book about climate change that sparked a lifelong passion.

Today, the 2015 WashU engineering alumna is helping advance climate action as a climate policy and intergovernmental relations supervisor for the California Environmental Protection Agency.
Throughout her career, Levin has been working to build a more sustainable future for generations to come.

A former NCAA champion runner for the Bears, Levin credits her WashU experience with preparing her not only as an engineer, but also as a leader and communicator.

One year after falling just short of the finish line, WashU Racing came back stronger.

The student team earned the best finish in McKelvey history at Formula SAE Michigan, placing 25th overall and taking home first place in the Business Presentation event. They also successfully completed every dynamic event, including the endurance race that tested months of hard work, determination and engineering excellence.

As the team says: "Building People by Building Cars."

"This is going to be cool when it works."

Every fall, McKelvey engineering seniors take on open-ended design challenges that push them to think beyond the classroom. From brainstorming and prototyping to testing and redesigning, students gain firsthand experience navigating the engineering design process while creating solutions for real customers.

Sometimes the best lessons come from building something that doesn't work perfectly the first time.
