St. Mary's College Anthropology Department

St. Mary's College Anthropology Department "Anthropology is the most humanistic of the sciences and the most scientific of the humanities." --Alfred L. Kroeber The Department of Anthropology at St.

Mary's College of Maryland, located in the Kent Hall academic building on campus, provides students with a comprehensive foundation of anthropological study. The Anthropology major consists of a four-field approach: cultural anthropology and the study of historic and contemporary societies (ethnography, ethnology, and ethnohistory), archaeology and the study of material culture (prehistoric, histo

ric, and underwater archaeology), biological anthropology (biology, human evolution, and forensics), and linguistic anthropology (language and culture). Students majoring in another discipline may also choose a minor in Anthropology. Classes are taught by full-time professors as well as adjunct instructors from community institutions including Historic St. Mary's City and Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum. Notable programs include a signature study abroad program in the Gambia, a small country in West Africa; a ten-week archaeology field school at Historic St. Mary's City; and numerous field trips to museums and archaeological sites.

This summer we are hosting our annual Field School! In addition to the basics of archaeological field work and lab processes, students will learn digital recordation techniques using ESRI Field Maps, mobile photogrammetry and digital mapping!

This year’s field school will provide a unique experience in Community Based archaeology, where students will be involved in the Archaeology of Memorialization, a multi-year project carried out by The Montpelier Descendants Committee and James Madison's Montpelier.

The overall goal of this project is to assist in the construction of a
Memorial to the Enslaved at Montpelier in an area adjacent to but outside of the Burial Ground for the Enslaved.

Students will help our team 1) define the extent of the burial ground in order to protect those burials, 2) explore archaeological evidence for how the enslaved and their descendants commemorated and honored that space.

This will help the MDC in restoring the landscape of the burial ground, and honoring those buried there.
