Matthew Gaffney Foundation

Matthew Gaffney Foundation Program to provide college opportunities to highly motivated, economically disadvantaged students

We know what these colleges and universities are looking for in students and we help our students write compelling essays that make them unique in the eyes of admission directors. We also provide:
· SAT/ACT preparation
· Course advisement
· College placement counseling
· College mentoring
· Supervised trips to visit colleges
· A summer camp experience
Our Director, Dr. Margaret G. Benedict, has

established strong personal relationships with the admissions directors at top universities. "Over the past ten years our students have been accepted at major colleges and universities such as: Bates, Boston College, Bowdoin, Brown, Bucknell, Columbia, Connecticut College, Dartmouth, Franklin & Marshall, Gettysburg, Harvard, Lehigh, Pitzer, Princeton, St. Lawrence, Trinity, University of Pennsylvania, University of Richmond, University of Vermont, University of Virginia, Vanderbilt, Wesleyan and Williams." We help students in the NY metropolitan area as well as foreign students who want to attend colleges in the U.S.

On April 10, Dr. B took a group of juniors: Samantha Wynne (Norwalk High), Yisel Vazquez-Santiago (Norwalk High), Ashley Diaz (Norwalk High), and Shirley Milian (AITE Stamford) to visit Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. The group toured the campus and had lunch with Jacklyn Brzoska, a Gaffney Scholar and current junior majoring in Neuroscience and Behavior with a minor in Chemistry.

Jacklyn is conducting research on neurodegenerative diseases using stem cell models; the results of her work have been accepted for publication. She plans to write her senior thesis on Alzheimer’s disease and take a gap year to study for the MCAT before pursuing both an MD and a PhD in neuroscience.

What makes her story even more powerful is that she has been able to fully focus on her academic and research goals thanks to $98,000 per year in scholarships and grants from Wesleyan.

Jacklyn is also part of a growing legacy within the Gaffney community. Her cousin, Natalia Kotowska, is a Gaffney Scholar who graduated from Fairfield University and is now attending Fordham Law School. Currently, Gaffney has four students in law school, two in dental school, three in medical school and a master’s degree candidate at Harvard.

As college costs continue to rise, Gaffney Scholars continue to earn the support they need to succeed. This year alone, students have received significant financial aid from schools including Barnard, Connecticut College, Lehigh, Johns Hopkins, Trinity, Tufts, Wesleyan, and Vassar.

We are incredibly proud of Jacklyn and excited for the next group of rising seniors.

Dr. B took the students on a campus tour of Connecticut College in New London!

Emily (on right), a Gaffney student enjoying her first year at Conn College, was thrilled to see us!

Nelly (on the left) is still navigating the waitlist, while Noran and Itzel (in the center) have acceptances on the table and are now deciding where they’ll call home next year.

This is what it’s all about: opportunities, choices, and finding the right fit.

Next week, Dr. B will be back on the road, taking our juniors to Wesleyan University to keep the momentum going.

And a huge congratulations to Mallory, who was awarded $98,000 per year from Wesleyan, an incredible achievement!

Real advice. Real students. Real insight.

We were so lucky to have Jeremy (Trinity College ’30) and Diego (Bowdoin College ’30) come back and speak with our current juniors about the college admissions process last Sunday.

Some of the biggest takeaways:
• Your story matters — essays are everything
• Be able to demonstrate what you are bringing to the college's community
• Apply for fly-ins, stay in dorms, and show interest. The Coalition for College website lists many of the fly-in programs
• When you visit schools, try to get a sense of the vibe. Talk to students. Observe how they interact with each other.
• Impact counts — tutoring, volunteering, helping your community

They also shared tactical advice on:
• Financial aid nuances
• The role of testing, timing, and strategy

And maybe most importantly, there’s no one “perfect” applicant.

Thank you, Jeremy and Diego, for giving back and helping the next class navigate the process with more clarity and confidence.

Congrats to Jeremy!

Jeremy, Class of 2030, was awarded $98,000 per year in scholarship funding from Trinity College in Hartford! This is the largest scholarship award in The Matthew Gaffney Foundation's history!

Jeremy’s hard work, thoughtful positioning, and strong application truly paid off. This is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.

If you think top schools are out of reach financially, think again! We are still accepting juniors, high school class of 2027!

If you want to support more students like Jeremy, consider making a donation. Link in bio.

This past week, Dr. B visited Trinity College and had lunch with two incredible Matthew Gaffney Foundation scholars there, both on track to graduate debt-free!

Rachel Rojas is majoring in Psychology and Sociology and plans to pursue graduate school to become a psychologist. Denise Pedraza Guzman is majoring in Chemistry and hopes to work in research at a private company.

Both students shared how happy they are at Trinity and how meaningful their college experience has been. Seeing them thrive, academically and personally, is exactly why this work matters.

And the momentum continues! Dr. B is visiting Harvard this week to connect with several Gaffney scholars currently studying there. She’ll even be having lunch with a Gaffney alum who is now pursuing graduate work, a powerful reminder of how far these students can go!

Access. Opportunity. Confidence. The future is bright. 💙

This past Sunday at the New Canaan Library, we met with a few of the talented juniors who have been accepted into the Matthew Gaffney Foundation College Admissions Mentorship Program.

Our mission is simple: to give highly motivated, economically disadvantaged students the chance at a successful college experience and a strong career.

For more than 20 years, the Gaffney Foundation has helped over 200 students gain admission to highly selective colleges, including Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Dartmouth, Lehigh, Brown, Vanderbilt, Williams, and more, with financial aid packages that meet each student’s designated need through grants rather than loans.

If you’re a high-achieving student with a rigorous course load who wants to graduate from a great college with little or no debt, apply today!

We still have limited spots available for the 2026–2027 cycle! Application link is in the bio.

Your future starts here.

Alumni Spotlight: Kalyn Duarte

We are proud to highlight Kalyn Duarte, whose academic journey and commitment to community health reflect the mission and impact of the Matthew Gaffney Foundation.

Kalyn graduated from Bowdoin College in 2023 with degrees in Biology and Latin American, Latinx, and Caribbean Studies, and did so debt-free!! She is currently working at Planned Parenthood as a clinic assistant, where she serves immigrant and low-income communities and works directly with patients who need compassionate, accessible care.

Kalyn was recently accepted to Yale University’s Graduate Entry Prespecialty in Nursing program in the Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner track. Her long-term goal is to build a career in community health, with a special focus on research and advocacy around lupus, a condition that disproportionately affects Latina women.

Kalyn’s story is a powerful example of how opportunity, education, and purpose can come together to create lasting impact, not just for one student, but for entire communities.

Congratulations, Kayln, on your acceptance to Yale!

We are thrilled to spotlight Diego Muralles, a dual-sport athlete and Engineering Pathway student at Norwalk High School, who has just been accepted to Bowdoin College, Class of 2030, with a substantial scholarship.

Bowdoin is one of the nation’s most selective liberal arts colleges, and Diego’s accomplishment reflects his exceptional work ethic, resilience, and drive, both academically and athletically. His commitment to excellence has opened a door to an extraordinary opportunity, and we couldn’t be prouder.

Students like Diego remind us why the Matthew Gaffney Foundation continues its mission: to support motivated, high-achieving young people as they pursue rigorous academic paths and bright futures.

Please join us in congratulating Diego and wishing him every success as he begins this exciting next chapter. We know he will continue to shine.

If you’re inspired by Diego’s journey and would like to help us support more students like him, we welcome your support. Every contribution helps create opportunities that change lives. See the link to donate in our bio.
