We’re celebrating one of our student workers, Ash Arumugum, who will be graduating with an M.A. in education! 🎓🎉

"I worked at the Robin Li and Melissa Ma Science library for my entire Stanford experience, and it was such a wonderful time. The library has become a second home to me on campus, and I have enjoyed forming close relationships with the library staff, my fellow student employees, and our library ‘regulars’! Whether I was opening or closing shift, the library was a great place to start and end my days. A big thank you to Aparna Sharma for being such an inviting and fun work mentor!” - Ash Arumugum.

Thank you for all that you’ve done for the libraries, Ash, and congratulations! 🥳

“That’s what we do in the Libraries, right? Our main reason for being here is offering support to people in doing research or teaching a class, and that, for me, is the big thing.”

At Stanford, the story of technology isn’t just told. It’s preserved, studied, and brought to life.

Since 1980, Henry Lowood has shaped how Stanford collects and interprets the history of science and technology, and media. For over more than four decades, his work has helped define how we understand the cultural impact of video games, virtual worlds, and interactive simulations, as well as document the ways in which Silicon Valley transformed into a global leader of technology.

A fan of board games growing up, Henry acquired Stanford’s first game collection in 2000, right when the academic field was taking off. As the founder of How They Got Game, he has led efforts to preserve digital games as historical artifacts, partnering with institutions like the Library of Congress and the Internet Archive to ensure these emerging forms of media aren’t lost to time.

For more than 50 years, Ken and Caretha Coleman helped shape the culture and ethics of Silicon Valley as business leaders, mentors, and advocates for inclusive workplaces. Across technology, venture capital and health care, they advised generations of executives and worked to expand opportunity and representation in the industry.

With support from a Stanford Associates grant, Stanford University Libraries is preserving that impact through the Ken and Caretha Coleman Archive of Black Histories in Silicon Valley. Stanford Associates grants support time-sensitive projects across the university. In this case, alumni funding accelerated the collection and preservation of oral histories, personal papers and community records that might otherwise have been lost.

Because of that support, these stories will inform scholarship, inspire future generations and help ensure Silicon Valley’s history is told more fully and accurately.
