Stanford’s Travel/Study program offers trips to destinations around the world, enriched with insights from Stanford faculty. In 2027, Doerr School of Sustainability faculty will be leading trips to Chile, Antarctica, the Philippines, and more.

A Stanford degree is not required. In addition to alumni, participants can include spouses, parents, grandparents, and children of alumni, as well as friends and others seeking exceptional travel experiences. Links in the comments for details.

Astronaut and geological sciences alum Jessica Watkins, '10, is commanding NASA's SpaceX Crew-13 mission today 🚀

From the Farm to the International Space Station 🚀

Tomorrow, Stanford alum Jessica Watkins, 10, will command NASA’s SpaceX Crew-13 mission. Liftoff is set for no earlier than 11:10 a.m. EDT on Thursday, Oct. 1, from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Watkins earned her undergraduate degree in geological and environmental sciences at Stanford, then a PhD in geology from UCLA. As a geologist, she studied the surface of Mars as part of the Curiosity rover science team at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. NASA selected her as an astronaut in 2017.

This is her second mission to the station. On NASA’s SpaceX Crew-4 mission in 2022, she spent 170 days in space across Expeditions 67 and 68. With Crew-13, she’ll become the first NASA astronaut to launch twice aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.

Watkins will lead a four-person international crew that includes: NASA astronaut Luke Delaney (pilot), CSA astronaut Joshua Kutryk, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov. They'll fly aboard the Dragon spacecraft Grace. Over their long-duration mission, the crew will:

1. Study human stem-cell-derived tissues to help researchers treat heart disease and Parkinson's disease
2. Explore crop production for longer missions to the Moon and Mars
3. Investigate the blood flow abnormalities seen in spaceflight
4. Test new diagnostic equipment for monitoring crew health

This summer, over 200 students participated in sustainability internships offered by Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability programs and university partners.

The programs give students opportunities to learn from industry leaders, try out different sustainability career paths, and build bridges to full-time employment.

“I’m interested in jobs that are innovating on energy and working toward both improving people’s lives and filling in gaps in knowledge,” said Laura Blackstone, PhD ’26.

“It’s amazing to see professionals in the industry doing what they do best,” added environmental systems engineering senior Maya Ordas.

Wildfires can turn natural metals in soil into toxic, airborne particles. Researchers are working to predict where these metals travel to help warn people in harm’s way.

They’ve installed prototype devices on firetrucks to provide real-time measurements of temperature, humidity, and toxic gas to first responders, helping them make critical decisions during a fire.

The team aims to distribute the truck-mounted sensors and filters to firefighters across the U.S. and make a smoke toxicity forecast available to the public within two years.
