Jorge Espinosa and Renato Haro traveled from Ecuador to Mississippi State this fall to work on a big goal: helping farms back home plan for the water they’ll need in the years ahead. šŸ’§

The two Universidad Central del Ecuador professors spent time in our Watersheds and Water Quality Research Lab with John Ramirez Avila testing Catalpa Creek water and learning modeling tools to take home. Their partnership with MSU began with an Engineers Without Borders water project in Ecuador and has grown into a funded research collaboration.

Aiming for orbit! šŸš€

CubeSat at MSU, a student-led team in our Department of Aerospace Engineering, earned a spot in the University Nanosatellite Program, backed by the Air Force Research Laboratory and NASA. Only eight universities were selected this year.

This summer, team members took part in workshops, developed mission requirements and refined design concepts for 1-Mississippi, a CubeSat that would use remote sensing to spot wildfires, harmful algal blooms and gaseous emissions.

Now they're bringing what they learned back to the rest of the team's 35+ members, one step closer to their long-term goal: designing, launching and operating Mississippi's first satellite.

Congratulations to ECE professor Dr. Yong Fu (PI) for being awarded an NSF grant! (NSF pass-through: University of South Carolina)

This award will support their research on ā€œParallel Alternating Current Optimal Power Flow-Based Multiscale Frequency Stability-Constrained Unit Commitment with Inverter-Based Resources.ā€

This project will develop new methods for analyzing and maintaining the stability of modern electric power grids as renewable and inverter-based energy resources become more prevalent. The team will create computational tools to help power system operators better understand frequency stability, evaluate operating conditions and improve grid reliability under increasingly complex energy demands.

This research has the potential to support a more resilient and reliable electric grid while helping utilities integrate renewable energy resources without compromising system performance and stability.

We are so proud of our faculty!

Congratulations to three of our civil engineering students recognized by the American Institute of Hydrology!

Jesus Ortiz Garcia, who now works for Kisinger Campo & Associates, and Valeria Hernandez Zambrano received the 2026 RISE Graduate and Undergraduate Student Awards, and Diego Galindo Cruz was named a distinguished honoree.

ā€œI began with no research experience and saw research as something out of my reach, and this project proved to me that it was not,ā€ Hernandez Zambrano said.

Ever wondered how airplane parts are made? Here’s your chance to find out. āœˆļø

Mississippi State is the state’s new ACE Composites Hub! Our IDEELab and MSU’s Advanced Composites Institute are offering hands-on training in aerospace composites. You’ll take an online course, then spend a week in the lab building the skills aerospace companies are hiring for. It’s open to students, community members and local employees at no cost, and travel, lodging and meals support is available for those who qualify.

Tag someone who should know about this! šŸ‘‡
