Have you ever wondered who was responsible for all of these amazing logos and icons? It's our one and only Director of Conference Design! Andrew Mickle is a fifth-year Master's student studying Public Policy and Political Science. We were able to get a moment to sit down with him and talk a little more about his position and what some of his favorite things with this conference.

What is your favorite thing about said position?
It gives me a creative outlet that I care about and am motivated to actually put in the work in for.

What is your favorite thing about PHUNC?
I love seeing how thoughtful, creative, and talented our next generation of leaders are!

Why did you want to be a part of the Secretariat?
Despite my personal love of PUNC, I really do believe PHUNC is the most valuable thing that our organization does. I loved being able to help put the weekend together in a smaller part as CD/Chair in previous years, but I really wanted the opportunity to be one of the people making it happen this year.

What is something you think people don't realize about running PHUNC/being in the Secretariat?
Conference weekend is busy, but the amount of moving parts and people power behind planning, preparing, and putting it all together beforehand is truly astonishing (in the best way possible).

What is going to set this PHUNC apart from any other?
I said this before, but we were truly blessed to have been able to ride out the pandemic year with a not only functional but very good PHUNC VIII. I think that the effort it took to keep us moving forward, more than ever, is going to really shine through when we are still able to put on our best-quality PHUNC yet this Fall.

What is a quote that always sticks in your mind?
“A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.” - John A. Shedd

Committee development? Position allocations? All thing crisis? That's right, it's the man who makes all this happen- our Under Secretary General for Crisis and Committee Development! Dennis Liflyandchick is a senior studying Biology with a vertebrate physiology focus and a Kinesiology minor. With such a big position, we just had to get an interview with him to find out exactly what it takes to get the committees together for the conference.

What is your favorite thing about said position?
Helping the HoCs realize their creative visions.

What is your favorite thing about PHUNC?
Seeing the high schoolers getting really engaged and invested in their committee and delegate position.

Best PHUNC Memory?
Building off my previous answer, walking into the committee room and seeing the delegates enthusiastically debating and coordinating troop movements over a big battle map we had made. The look on the faces of those incredibly engaged delegates is what I hope to recreate during this conference.

Why did you want to be a part of the Secretariat?
I love the process of crisis/committee development and I want to help the HoCs to make their as amazing as I know they can be.

What is going to set this PHUNC apart from any other?
We’re going to come back with a bang. We’ve learned a lot from the difficulties of this past year and with our fantastic SG in the lead, we’re ready to make this conference phenomenal.

What is something you want to tell the advisors/delegates about this conference?
You’re in good hands. This Secretariat has a lot of experience with both in-person and virtual conferences and is dedicated to making this PHUNC a fantastic experience for everyone involved.

You get to pass on one piece of advice you wish someone had told you in high school- what would it be?
It’s ok to forgive yourself.

What is a quote that always sticks in your mind?
“Success isn’t about courage, it’s about a complete and utter lack of shame” - Nicolai Sartori

It's time for an upgrade, brought to you by the one and only Director of Technology, Rachel Hoenisch! Rachel is a senior studying Biomedical Engineering, and she was kind enough to take time out of her very busy schedule to sit down with us and talk a little bit more about her position and what it takes to keep everything running.

What is your favorite thing about said position?
The thrill when something finally works after hours of it not working.

Why did you want to be a part of the Secretariat?
Technology doesn't like doing what it's supposed to do; I like changing it's mind.

What is something you think people don't realize about running PHUNC/being in the Secretariat?
In regards to running websites; if something isn't working, there's a 99% chance it's because some plugin is misbehaving.

What is your favorite type of weather?
On a hot July afternoon, when the storm that has been looming for hours is finally upon you. The sky is dark and heavy and you see lightning flash in the distance. After a few long moments, the thunder rolls. You know you should get inside soon, but the rain has begun to fall, so wonderfully cool against your sunburned skin. All around you, the heat begins to fade from the world, and the wind tugs at your hair.

You get to pass on one piece of advice you wish someone had told you in high school- what would it be?
Nothing is guaranteed. Sometimes life shatters all our best-made plans. So when the storm comes, hold on to whatever you can and endure. It will pass eventually.

What is a quote that always sticks in your mind?
"It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life."

Did you hear the news? It's time to meet our Director of Fundraising! Ashley Johnson is a junior studying International Politics. While most of her work is behind the scenes, this position is the reason we are able to donate as much money as we do to our philanthropy each year. We pulled her away from her busy schedule to get a quick interview to learn a little bit more about her and what she loves about this conference.

What is your favorite thing about said position?
Being able to work with the PHUNC philanthropy!

Why did you want to be a part of the Secretariat?
I think it’s the best thing PSIADA does, and I love being able to get involved with the philanthropy and high schoolers.

What is something you want to tell the advisors/delegates about this conference?
That the college students are just as much, if not more excited to be there than the high schoolers, and we are so passionate about making sure they have a great time!

What's the best joke you've ever heard?
Don’t eat the French fish, it’s poisson.

How do you deal with work stress?
I make a list of everything I have to do and start tackling it from there.

What is your definition of success?
Being able to provide for myself and give back, whether that’s to my family or an organization I’m passionate about.

Right on time, today we get to meet the one who keeps us all on schedule, the Director of Logistics! Emma Chan is a junior studying English and Public Relations with a minor in Spanish, and she is responsible for the logistical side of PHUNC. We managed to get an interview with her where she shared exactly what it takes to keep a conference like this running without delay.

What is your favorite thing about said position?
I love how involved my role is with PHUNC and how I get to communicate with and help everyone within the conference!

What is your favorite thing about PHUNC?
The phenomenal energy of preparing for and being a part of conference weekend--it’s a truly unparalleled experience.

Why did you want to be a part of the Secretariat?
I love PSIADA and both of our home conferences, so I wanted to help play an integral role in aiding in the success of PHUNC and give back to this organization and conference that have given me so much.

What is something you think people don't realize about running PHUNC/being in the Secretariat?
It’s a lot of hard work! I won’t sugarcoat it, putting on a conference requires a lot of dedication and long nights, whether you are a secretariat member, a Head of Committee, or any other role. But it is so, so rewarding to see the conference unfold after knowing you helped make it happen. It may seem scary but if you bring the passion and hard work to the table, I promise the initial fear pales in comparison to the reward.

What is something you want to tell the advisors/delegates about this conference?
PHUNC was my favorite conference to have attended in high school, and I greatly hope that delegates get to say that too. The energy and joy that comes from PHUNC can’t be replicated anywhere else and I wish that everyone can experience it at least once.

What's the best joke you've ever heard?
“Why do we tell actors to break a leg?”
“Because every play needs a cast”

What would be the title of your memoir?
“Sorry, Thursday’s No Good, Can We Do Next Week?”

It's time to meet the one and only Charge d'Affaires! Today we get to learn more about our amazing Charge Matthew Fehrle, a sophomore studying Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. While you can find his recipe for success on our Instagram, we were able to get to know some more about him during an interview where we learned what it takes to be the Charge.

What is your favorite thing about said position?
Being able to work directly with the advisors and delegates has always been my favorite part of Model UN, and I have always been a huge fan of planning events with others. I also like the opportunity to send more emails as it helps me not only as a member of the club, but also as a student currently trying to get more involved with different organizations and jobs.

Why did you want to be a part of the Secretariat?
I have always wanted to help run a conference since I did Model UN in High School, and I really wanted to get involved in PSIADA since the club has done so much for me, so applying for the Secretariat was just the natural progression of me getting more involved within my passions. I always loved having correspondence with advisors back when I did Model UN in high school, so Charge was the most intriguing position for me.

What is something you think people don't realize about running PHUNC/being in the Secretariat?
Despite how simple the weekend itself can be at times, preparing for PHUNC is an extremely long process. Before schools even find out that we are going to hold PHUNC this coming fall, we have to have large outlines ready for each and every aspect of PHUNC. The Secretariat makes planning PHUNC look easy, and I could not be more proud of the wonderful team I have been working with. No effort is a solo effort, as each member of the secretariat is always willing to help each other at a moments notice. If anyone of us have a question about something we are preparing for the conference, it only takes a simple sentence and a few minutes to be presented with a response that leads us in the right direction.

What is going to set this PHUNC apart from any other?
Not to brag, but PHUNC IX has an absolute dream team of a Secretariat, and with all of us working towards the goal of bringing PHUNC IX in person this year, I think all of us are focused on nothing short of perfection. Each of us knows what must be done in order to be prepared for PHUNC, and I think that goal-focused mentality is going to help us bring the best iteration of our high-school conference to date. We are all doing this for the kids who deserve to have fun and travel doing something they love, so we know what is at stake.

What is your favorite kind of weather?
My favorite kind of weather is not even something I want to be outside in. I always love whenever there is a huge blizzard going on for almost the entire day, with snow quickly blanketing the sidewalks as you look on in awe. Everyone inside the house is focused on staying warm and cozy, as the kids are usually staring out the window wondering when they can finally go out in the snow. Something about that period of waiting is so serene and never ceases to amaze.

What is a quote that always sticks in your mind?
“It doesn't matter what you think. Here I am”

You get to pass on one piece of advice you wish someone had told you in high school- what would it be?
“It is okay to not know what you want to do with your life.” During high school, I was so preoccupied with trying to figure out every detail of my future that I did not take the time to simply live as a kid. Despite what many people may think about college, we are still really just kids finding our way in life. You have so much time to have some idea of what you want to do as an adult, so finding the time to simply do what you want and experience new things is so precious. We can never escape the flow of time, so it is important to focus on yourself and take each day as it comes.

Ready to meet our incredible Chief of Staff? Then today is your special day! It's time to learn more about COS Wyatt Gould, a senior studying Security Risk Analysis. Here's a few snippets from our interview with him talking about PHUNC, some fun facts, and a little bit more about his role.

What is your favorite thing about being Chief of Staff?
Getting to see all the little things that go into the conference. The position is involved in nearly every area of conference planning and preparation and it is really cool to see how all of these little disconnected things are starting to come together to form PHUNC IX.

What is your favorite thing about PHUNC?
Seeing the conference come together on conference weekend. Watching staffers become invested in the crisis arcs they are helping create and seeing delegates find their voice in committee.

What is your best PHUNC Memory?
Chairing for my very first time at PHUNC was special. It was incredible to watch the delegates do so much and become more confident and outspoken in the committee within only the short span of three days.

What is something you think people don't realize about running PHUNC/being in the Secretariat?
I think maybe the full scope of what goes into the conference and how many people contribute to making it what it is. There are, of course, the staffers and the delegates, but also the advisors and schools do a lot in registering and preparing the delegates before they even arrive, and also by the time any committee gets to PHUNC it has been test-run by many PSIADA members who may not have made it to the conference. There is the secretariat and the countless people who have helped us register rooms, reserve event space, and sponsored the conference. It really is a monumental undertaking by everyone involved and it is so incredible to see all of these interconnected pieces fit together.

What's the best joke you've ever heard?
What do you call someone who has fungus growing out of their ears? A doctor.

What is your definition of success?
Being happy.

What would be the title of your memoir?
Waking at Noon

Are you ready to learn some more about our amazing Secretary-General? Well you're in luck! Today we are learning about our amazing SG Emma Lutz, a senior studying Global & International Studies and Communications Arts & Sciences with a minor in Spanish. We were able to steal a few minutes with her for a quick interview talking about PHUNC, her position, and a few fun facts we cannot wait to share!

Why did you want to be a part of the Secretariat?
Because I think this conference is the best thing we do in PSIADA. Unironically this conference has helped me to grow so much and I want to do all I can to give back.

What is going to set this PHUNC apart from any other?
You literally won’t be able to prevent the good vibes from boosting your spirits.

What do you want to see come out of PHUNC IX?
Rising from the ashes of online, I want to bring back the fun family feeling of PHUNC. Family might be the wrong word, but I want to really focus on community and building relationships across the staff, advisors, and delegates.

What is your favorite thing about PHUNC?
Talking to the students between committee sessions and seeing their ideas.

What is your definition of success?
Leaving something better than you found it, whether that is a career project, someone’s self-confidence, or a piece of paper you drew on.
